It's not that simple. NY is a deep blue state, any Dem starts out with a HUGE advantage.
If he were to run for President, I would expect NY to be a battleground state, but I wouldn't expect him to win it necessarily. But that doesn't mean he couldn't win nationally.
Pataki has won 3 times in NY, yet, he'd have absolutely no chance of carrying it if he were the nominee. Governor and President, as well as Mayor and President, are very different offices, and people vote for them for different reasons.
I am a perfect example of that. I'd vote for Rudy in a heartbeat for Mayor/Governor/Senator, but I would only vote for him for President as a last resort, there is no way I would vote for him in the primary, because of his views on Abortion and Guns.
Here's my guess, however:
Rudy runs for President, doesn't get the nod, and runs for Mayor again in 2009.

That is a scenario that I never thought of. - His running for mayor again, that is.
thanks

This is a Wrong Move. The NY State Republican Party are idiots! Spencer is a good candidate and will bash Hillary and now they are going to pull in another Mealey mouthed person to run against her like they did with Pirro.

I love how this woman has a chance in the eyes of the NY Times because she believes in "abortion rights" and will attract women. This, of course, implied the majority of women are for "abortion rights."
I do not believe that to be the case. How can you vote for anyone who supports vacuuming a babies' brains out?

People, this is NY. It elects liberals. This is not a matter of who the GOP puts up. This is a matter of draining Hillary's coffers. Her fundraising has to be gutted or there won't be any sort of primary challenge for her in 2008, and in the absence of a significant primary challenge the Democrats will rally around her from day one.
The NY GOP has simply got to come up with a credible candidate. If Spencer is an adulterer, toss him overboard. This new woman has no credentials. Toss her too. In a state that size, there has to be a Republican who can run.

Ok lets take off the gloves and talk some hard truths here.
The reason why John Spencer is having a hard time nailing down the New York State GOP nomination is because George E. Pataki doesn't want him to get it.
Pataki has this stupid notion that HE GEORGE E. PATAKI the failed rino governor of a state that is about to become mexifornia East, can be ( drum roll and please sit down ) President of the United States! Yes the head of New York's rino heard actually really no B.S. thinks he can win a series of GOP primaries and get the top spot, or at least enough to get some dope to name him VP.
To do this Pataki needs money. There is just so much GOP money in New York, and no more. Consequently, if Pataki can engineer a senate race in which the Republicans run a dead body like this fraud McFarland, no one will contribute to her and they will give their money to Pataki. If he had his way and thought he could get away with it, Pataki would see to it the Hillary Clinton ran unopposed. Since he can't do that he is doing the only thing he can and that is hold back John Spencer. He is afraid of the name Clinton. The rest of the feckless NYS GOP is afraid of the name Clinton.
John Spencer will give her the fight of her life. The "experts" are completely overlooking this race. They have no understanding of John Spencer. Yes, I am a strong supporter of John's, but the fact is that when you have a Clinton running now and maybe later on one side and a warrior that is not afraid of Clinton or her name, how can this not be the most exciting race in the country?
John will have the money to fight this fight. He has the same fund raiser that generated 40 million dollars for Rick Lazio in just 5 1/2 months. That was when people only THOUGHT they knew how dangerous a Hillary Clinton presidency would be. She only got 55%. If you think that was big, you are not watching carefully enough.
The left thinks they now have the right candidate to run against. They think they can run two campaigns with opposite aims at the same time. I don't. I don't think it took more that a sharp college kid to get Hillary Clinton elected in a state like New York in 2000, with NO real press conferences. Howie Wolfson is no political genius. Neither is she. Will John win? We'll see.
He will get at least the same 46% that John Fasso did. Fasso was the last unflinching Republican to run statewide.
Fasso had about 6.00 in his treasury and ran against a well funded well known Democrat. How can this not be the top race this year?

Need a tough NY kinda GUY, who says,
"Some experience you got, #itch. What was
your job, holding them down for Bill?"
Harassing them into silence afterward?
Where are those FBI Files?
Still believe in the Black Panthers?
Why did YOU fire the Head of the FBI
a day before Vince Foster's body was found?
Will you re-open that investigation?
If Spencer or someone could deliver 30 or 40 days of this, before going down to defeat in a somewhat close election ... or at least closer than the last Hillary Landslide... we would never hear from this crooked slut again. She would be Barbara Boxer-ized ... a joke in the Senate forever ...just like Ted!
Case Closed, baby.
