With so many citizens across American feeling the pinch of the recession and with a bloated budget looming over them, it's time for members of Congress to take pay cut, some House members are saying.
Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (D-Ariz.) this week introduced the "Taking Responsibility for Congressional Pay Act," which would cut senators' and representatives' salaries by 5 percent starting Jan. 1, 2011. The measure would enact the first pay cut for Congress since 1933.
At least 12 other congressmen have signed onto the bill this week.
The purpose of the bill is to "make Members of Congress show a personal commitment to cutting federal spending," according to a press release.

Nothing to see here its just a show. Dems in charge
Most all those jerks should be fired and sent home without any "retirement" benefits since all they've done is destroy America.
You're probably right, but I was thinking more along the lines of:
No committee chairmanship for you sweetie!
Let them vote for the pay cut first, then fire them!
What absolute nonsense. I believe that they should be paid based upon the quality of their work. If that were the case we wouldn’t have to worry about term limits as they’d all be working for free, and owe money to us.
IMHO, senatorial pay should be limited by law to that of a Captain in the Army, with a representative’s pay limited to that of a Lieutenant. Elected officials in the House or Senate should also be accomodated in barracks or quarters equivalent to those ranks, and they should be required to stay in equivalent quarters (where available) at any nearby military facility when they travel. Further, they should only be afforded the type and expense of transportation afforded said ranks when they travel.
Might get them to stop being jackasses about the military budget.

Knowing Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (D-Ariz.) will be in the minority at best, of course take the gravy now, than stick it to evil Republicans
How about a spending cut instead?
If they take a cut in pay, how will they justify the millions each of them spend to run for office every two years? (sarcasm off or on here....not sure what to do)
I won’t be happy until they are unpaid.
Hey, RAT, we got your “pay cut” right here and we are going to deliver it to your sorry asses in November!
It’s a start, if a poor one.
Here’s a better approach:
How about a 15% cut in manpower for all government entities except the military, the senate and congress.
The senate and congress should take a 50% cut in staff and a 50% cut in overall budget.
And a 15% across the board pay cut for all remaining government officials, bureaucrats and workers making above $50 K per year.
Senate and congress to use lowest cost public transportation available - no more private 757’s.
Senators and Congressmen/women pay for their own food and drink - no more $150,000 Pelosi style bar bills.
Eliminate handouts to able-bodied moochers.
No welfare or freebies to druggies - rehab only.
Eliminate the “Earned Income Tax Credit (EIC) which is just another phrase for welfare.
Eliminate all agriculture subsidies.
Eliminate all business and/or product subsidies.
Eliminate college grants and subsidies.
Eliminate PBS funding.
No handouts or government services of any kind to illegals with the sole exception of life threatening medical emergencies. Illegals seeking emergency medical services of any kind must agree to immediate deportation as soon as they are stabilized.
How about at least a 50% cut...They are all rich to begin with. Better yet make it minimum wage with very specific goals and objectives to be met.
That is a great idea. Hopefully they will do this. How many Republicans have signed up for this??
Maybe there should be a "means" test for how much they receive. After all, they think it is good enough for us.
Senators are rich. House members are not. I would not cut their pay; they have to keep 2 residences, and DC is expensive.
Is she going to give back the portion of her pay if the Congress DOES NOT approve her proposal? I’d be more respectful of her if she did.
5%????????how about 30%

Actually, there's a good reason for this -- actually following the Constitution for a change. Despite the title, the text is clear that no changes (increase or decrease) can be made mid-term.
Amendment 27 - Limiting Congressional Pay Increases. Ratified 5/7/1992.No law, varying the compensation for the services of the Senators and Representatives, shall take effect, until an election of Representatives shall have intervened.
