To my late Uncle Bill, Army Air Corp mechanic, Wheeler Field.
My Uncle Bill had wanted to be a pilot but got his knee shot out that morning and spent quite a long period recovering.
He ended up becoming a combat engineer in Patton’s Third Army. He was wounded again evacuating St. Vith during The Battle of The Bulge but made it home.
Wow, one of the very few that got to sample both German and Japanese heavy metal. God Bless your uncle’s memory. Most would not have kept serving after a debilitating injury like that.
Dad of a friend in high school sacked groceries at the local IGA. Had no idea until after he died that he served as a B-24 nose gunner flying out of North Africa. He never, ever talked about it.
