Schumer makes plea to Johnson to pass Ukraine aid: ‘He has to do the right thing’

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) made a plea for House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) to pass aid to Ukraine, during a Friday interview.

“We need Speaker Johnson to make sure that we get that aid,” Schumer said in an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. “If he put the bill on the floor, it would pass. There are a good number of Republicans in the House who know how important it is, and he has to see that history is on his back.”

“He cannot have obeisance to Donald Trump,” Schumer continued. “He has to do the right thing here.”

Schumer visited Ukraine Friday, as part of a congressional delegation set to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Senate Majority Leader also pushed Johnson to pass a national security spending package that the Senate passed last week, which features $60 billion in Ukraine aid.

Schumer also stressed that the delegation in Ukraine heard “in great detail” how Ukraine would win if it receives the aid. He also said an American in Ukraine told the delegation, how, if the U.S. does not provide Ukraine with further aid, “the Russians could be at the Polish border within a year.”

For his part, Johnson has pushed back against the Senate’s package, signaling that he won’t bring it to the House floor because it doesn’t have border security measures that House Republicans want.

I have a deal. It's called the border. Close down the border. Deport illegals. Cut off all welfare funding going to illegals. 1/3 of all saved funds can go to Ukraine, audited by an indendent auditor with public reports. And a strict daily limit of a very small number on border incursions. Any violation and that month's and the next month's Ukraine spending is terminated and the funds sequestered. And for each day, another two months.

I think any spending on Ukraine is an abomination because the whole thing starting with our color revolution and trying to kick the Russian bases out of Crimea was stupid and the deepstate arrogantly and stupidly way overplayed a hand that was a lot weaker than they thougth it was. But Schumer wouldn't even take that deal because he doesn't want a "fair" deal. He wants this AND that AND the other thing and none of that MAGA stuff.

When it comes to cutting losses, there is a saying in the stock industry that “your first loss is your best loss” Hindsight suggests the deal they worked out 2 years ago ceding the two primarily Russian eastern provinces may have been their best loss. The longer this goes on with no negotiation table as a backdrop, the more Ukraine stands to lose when they ultimately throw in the towel and, just as importantly, the more treasure the US expends prosecuting this war it stands to lose

Schumer and the Senate Democrats stupidly thought they could run the old game of a sell-out “compromise” provision on border security with the feckless Senate Republican leadership. Yet the measure was worse than nothing and could not be shoved through the House due to an angry GOP base. Schumer and Biden are now caught by their own arrogance and have nothing for Ukraine.
