State officials quiet on recourse after Rivian pauses $5B Georgia plant

Updated Information This story has been updated with a statement from the Georgia Department of Economic Development and Joint Development Authority of Jasper, Morgan, Newton, and Walton Counties.

(The Center Square) — While Rivian Automotive paused its $5 billion plant in Georgia, state officials declined to say how — or if — they might attempt to claw back massive taxpayer-backed incentives they offered the company.

In December 2021, state officials announced that Rivian planned to build a manufacturing facility in Georgia — its second U.S. plant. Georgia gave $1.5 billion in incentives and the deal was so significant that state leaders and economic development officials hosted a "Rivian Day" at the state capitol last year.

"Rivian Day is just the latest example of both our strong partnership with this innovative company and the fact that Georgia is fast becoming the EV capital of the nation," Republican Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said in a statement at the time.

While the governor was quick to tout the partnership a year ago, on Friday, Kemp's office declined to comment on Rivian's decision, referring all inquiries to the Georgia Department of Economic Development.

Kemp and the State of Georgia gave Rivian large tax breaks to locate the plant in rural Georgia. It was against the local citizen's objections and they filed lawsuits trying to stop the construction. They lost in the Courts but it appears God may be on their side.

Of course, now they have a large mud-hole of a construction site that will just sit as an ugly scar plus increased property taxes to remind them that the government ignored their wishes and went ahead with the tax-payer dollar give-a-ways,

I know a couple who put all their money into an enormous house near the new Ford Blue Oval City battery plant.

They said because of the plant their house price will only go up, then they can sell it and retire, living off the proceeds from selling the house.

In the meantime Ford cancelled plans for one electric car plant and halved production of their electric pickup.

Oops.

Rivian just announced two new vehicles, the R2 and the R3, with a starting price of $45,000. I wonder if those are now on hold with this delay in construction.

It was against the local citizen’s objections and they filed lawsuits ... .
*******
Which local citizens? Surely not all of them. The ones without well paying jobs? Or the leftist white-collar workers who “work” from home and think that jobs for others will widen their carbon footprint?

Kemp is a moron who is going to get his ass handed to him by the people he is in bed with. Georgia will have a black and blue Governor, soon.

EV too combat climate change -- a lousy idea turning worse with the passage of time. Without GOVERNMENT cash flow, venture capital investors would long ago have left the whole mess as a losing proposition.

The market and its 'invisible hand' is enforcing what governments cannot. Sense.

EVs are on their way out. It appears “remodeled” toilets are the new gotta have “next big thing.” Jugheads are are showing up at my door with their magic iPads on an hourly basis these days. Geez. Gimme a break.

Their Normal Illinois plant should have plenty of capacity. They only produced 57K vehicles last year and expect about the same this year.

Of course they're quiet...

They're still trying to figure out how to get all of this on a business card:

"...the Georgia Department of Economic Development and Joint Development Authority of Jasper, Morgan, Newton, and Walton Counties."

...along with the necessary organizational emblem, contact person, street address, office phone/cell phone/fax numbers, email address, website address, X handle (formerly known as Twitter), YouTube channel, QR code, personal pronouns and non-discrimination statement.

EVs are not selling nearly as well as they thought, I think the winter freeze where everyone’s EV batter went dead played a part.

People realized that already EVs can be a secondary vehicle, it can’t be your primary vehicle as it is not reliable.

That publicity certainly won't help EV sales in colder climates. The Chicago fiasco made national news.

“Residents near Rivian plant site say wells contaminated by silt runoff”

https://www.wsbtv.com/news/local/walton-county/residents-near-rivian-plant-site-say-wells-contaminated-by-silt-runoff/BDYZ7QERDFCL3JF7RUTNKXMUWI/

“WALTON COUNTY, Ga. — Residents who live near the massive Rivian EV plant site in east Georgia off I-20, say silt from the graded land is seeping into the water table and contaminating their drinking well water.

The co-founder of Rescue Ranch, a foster compound for medically challenged dogs and other animals, told Channel 2′s Tom Regan that the silt has filled her water tank and caked water filters after rain.

“It makes our drinking water absolutely undrinkable. You can’t cook with it. You can’t bath with it. We definitely don’t want to give our animals that. All of this started after the grading started at Rivian. There’s multiple members of the community struggling with the same issue that their water is no longer drinkable,” Renee Ussary said.”
