I’m not surprised as we were coming out of a small cold period. Times magazine putout in the early seventies that we were heading to an ice age. So temps started rising in 1979? Ok

Same reason why so many climate comparisons now start in the 1940s, a notoriously cold decade, rather than the 1930s, a hot decade from which many daily high temperature records are from.

See also Biden's employment brags comparing with the depths of the COVID lockdowns rather than the booming Trump economy pre-COVID.

Yeah, it’s funny they choose 1979 as a base to start from. Especially considering temperature data do go back a LOT further.
