College protesters want ‘amnesty.’ At stake: Tuition, legal charges, grades and graduation

Maryam Alwan figured the worst was over after New York City police in riot gear arrested her and other protesters on the Columbia University campus, loaded them onto buses and held them in custody for hours.

But the next evening, the college junior received an email from the university. Alwan and other students were being suspended after their arrests at the “ Gaza Solidarity Encampment,” a tactic colleges across the country have deployed to calm growing campus protests against the Israel-Hamas war.

The students’ plight has become a central part of protests, with students and a growing number of faculty demanding their amnesty. At issue is whether universities and law enforcement will clear the charges and withhold other consequences, or whether the suspensions and legal records will follow students into their adult lives.

How about 'no'?

Case in point: Bill Ayers and Bernadette Dorn seemed to go on to careers in academia after their roles in the Weather Underground.

Then again, the private sector may not be so kind.

And absolutely NO such amnesty for foreign students--they can get sent back home.

And that is EXERACTLY how kind they were to the j6 protestors.

A great ex is the 69 year old grandmother in CANCER treatment who had to STOP treatment and go to prison for 90 days and the 80 year old woman who is know in her town as the PRAYING grandmother who was outside the capitol and could be jailed for 10 years.

How abt NO to these brats. Treason penalty is DEATH. Send them to Gaza Hamas will do it for you.

Treat them like those who were arrested for trespassing on Jan 6th. Jail them without bail for starters.

Protests, like elections, have consequences.

These idiots made their beds, time to lie in them.

Cowards, they wear masks. They should spread their head shot photos around so employers can avoid these idiots.

Exactly. It's not just "tuition, legal charges, grades and graduation", it's also deportation.

I wouldn’t want any of them in my business or to do business with them.

Everything in life has consequences. I believe they should have been expelled from the university and any foreign student’s visa canceled immediately.

But, unfortunately, I expect “all charges will be dropped and their records expunged” - and they’ll be able to make up the time lost in their classes (if they were students, that is).

Cancel their student Visas and then, in the middle of the night, deport them to Saudi or Iraq. Repeat as necessary.

Charge back student loans, grants, housing. There’s a first amendment, but it’s not free.

whether the suspensions and legal records will follow students into their adult lives.

They are probably at least 18. THEY ARE ADULTS. Play stupid games, get stupid results.

Meanwhile, Dorn and Ayers, two individuals who should have been executed.

What sort of college would award degrees to Nazis? Flunk’em, and throw them out. Better yet, sue them for the cost of their escapades, and make them pay compensation to the real students whose educations were stolen.

If you cannot tell the difference between a massacre and a war you have no business graduating college.
