Florida aims at expanding Safe Haven policy to discourage abortion

CV NEWS FEED // Florida legislators are working to expand current Safe Haven policy in hopes of lowering the number of abortions in the state.

All states have a Safe Haven policy that allows for a mother to anonymously surrender her newborn up for adoption at participating hospitals and EMS and fire stations. Barring any signs of abuse or neglect, there will be no questions asked and no criminal charges.

The specifics of the policies vary by state. In Florida, the newborn can be surrendered up to seven days after birth.

The new legislation would expand the current Safe Haven laws, allowing for an infant up to 30 days old to be surrendered. The legislation received bipartisan support and is waiting to be signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis.

State Rep. Mike Beltran, a Republican and one of the bill’s sponsors, told Politico in a recent interview, “This was a way of doing something that was pro-life without making the left agitated. It was a good way to find common ground on the life issue when options were more limited.”

Politico reported that the legislation would “also authorize 911 responders to arrange an infant drop-off location in case the child’s guardian has no transportation to an agency’s site.”

Rep. Robin Bartleman, a Democrat, told Politico that although she is opposed to the state’s pro-life laws, she is supportive of the Safe Haven legislation.

“Once the infant is born, once a child is there, we want to save that child,” Bartleman said. “And not have stories where they’re dumped in a garbage bag. It’s really terrible this year.”

As CatholicVote previously reported, on April 29, a newborn baby girl was found dead in a garbage bin outside a dorm on the University of Tampa’s campus.

Florida passed its first Safe Haven law in 2000. The law was passed “in response to cases of newborn abandonment at unsafe locations such as public restrooms or trash receptacles,” according to the Tampa Bay Times. “Since then, about 380 newborns have been surrendered at a safe haven in Florida. In the same period, 63 infants are known to have been unsafely abandoned. Of those, 31 survived and 32 died.”

now streamline foster care and adoption, and more than anything, support mothers and fathers so nothing limits their ability to raise their children. make it easy, lower the price of adoption, take out ANYTHING that hinders these babies coming into a life and being cared for.

Right. And use taxpayer money to help these young women in trouble. We need the kids. The left just wants to sweep the fetus under the rug. 60 million so far. Will we step up to offer more than money/ I would think so. The left would disagree as that’s all they got.

Honestly… a Christian social worker lamented day after day that dead inside parents just spend the money the government sent for the kids on hair, nails, drugs and toys. She is not the only one.
These kids go without shoes and good but mom has great hair and nails.
If you wan to send these folks your money, feel free. Start a foundation.
Not any more of my tax dollars.
It is a lie that these folks just need money. Adoption would complete pay for themselves r pregnancy and expenses.
That’s a Marxist lie that they need more of my money.

Good stuff ... just don’t forget the numerous private pregnancy centers and other pro-life outfits. Government isn’t the be-all, end-all solution to all life’s problems.

I’d set up an adoption center in the Marquesas-French territory. Those folks intermarry-not good. Cerebral palsy. They’ve got room for a thousand or so. Dilute the gene pool. Polynesians are very family orientated and would welcome them.

Dear mom in boots. I totally agree. It has to come from the heart. How many churches would come together to offer their services free of charge? We’re in an election season and we need to step up unlike Linda Graham who stuck his foot in our mouths after the Roe overturn. A prospective shopping mall needs a big anchor tenant to get it started so that others will follow. What we need for adoption is a billionaire willing to step forward and start a big foundation. What’s bigger than life?

I bring up the Marquesas because when Polynesians help each other out It comes from the heart. Democrats are smart enough to appeal to women’s hearts-think soccer moms. In return they get their votes. Talk is cheap. We’re the party of doers.

Mary's Refuge exemplifies one way (not the only way) we can support women and babies in difficult circumstances.

A newborn can also be taken to an adoption agency for placement. There are different procedures of course.

Yup. We don't care about the babies at all, we just don't want the abortion horror stories to get out!
