Traffic safety advocates cheered a new law allowing the Big Apple to lower speed limits on city streets to as low as 10 miles per hour.

The legislation – deemed “Sammy’s Law” in memory of 12-year-old Sammy Cohen Eckstein who was fatally struck by a van near his Park Slope home in 2013 – passed as part of the state budget last month.

“This is a joyous but bittersweet moment,” Cohen Eckstein’s mother, Amy Cohen, said as she appeared at a press conference Thursday in Manhattan with Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

“Sammy was fierce and determined. Just a few weeks before he died he was the youngest one to complete a hundred mile bicycle ride,” she said of her son.

Who would be stupid enough to lower a speed limit to 10? I can’t even ride that slow on my bicycle.

Here’s a better idea. Teach people to look both ways before they cross the street.

“Sammy’s Law”

I hate these laws. I hate when grieving parents push these laws on everyone.

Yes (/s), th3y are .ikely working on a new law that charges drivers per minute everytime they use a road to get anywhere- hence the “need” to lower the speed limit in order tO increase the time of a vehicle on a road

How soon before they demand manufacturers install time meters on new vehickes?

Slower than traffic jams? They’d be going backwards.

Well it's true that auto accidents are up, so it's not obviously a bad idea.

But it might be speculated that accidents are up due to de-policing.

Right?

When you won’t tackle the big problems, you focus on speed limits and the size of soft drinks.

I have no problem with lower speed limits when applied appropriately - where a lower speed is truly called for.

But, my view of NYC traffic issues is, at least in Manhattan, the mix of vehicle types within the traffic is extremely varied and complex, including bicycles, motorized and non-motorized scooters and motorbikes of every size, two wheeled and three wheeled, and everyone out in and among the regular traffic lanes with not just the cars but trucks of every description. Keeping it all straight, in front, beside and behind you has to make you more of a “defensive” driver than you likely ever have been.

That will solve all of the state and city’s problems.

Both of these lefties are not very smart. But they’re loyal to the Democrat oath.
