I want to burn your Flag

With the recent patriotism renewal, and heightened awareness of flat etiquette, I would like to remind my fellow freepers about the proper disposal of our national symbol.

I recently attended a Boy Scouts fall camporee and we retired 14 Old Glories, and one thing that was brought up was that many do not know that there is a proper method of retiring our flag, and there are a few organizations that will perform the service for you.

Obviously, the Boy Scouts will and so will the American Legion, the VFW, and I am sure there are others out there that be pleased to perform the service for you.

So, if your flag has become tattered and unservicable, please do not just throw it into the trash or burning barrel, look up one of those organizations and arrange to have it retired with the respect it deserves. This goes for any American Flag, no matter it's size, from the big ones, down to the little ones on your cars' antenna.

Thanks!

I have attended a number of these flag retirement services and I am always moved by them.

If you are ever able to attend one, I urge you to do so.

They are done with honor and grace. Yes, the proper way to retire a flag is to burn it ceremoniously.

RE: Ceremonial Flag Retirement:

Anyone living in the St. Louis area who would like a flag properly retired (when it becomes faded, tattered or frayed) please FreepMail me.

My son is Troop Guide of a Boy Scout Troop that gathers flags year-round and retires hundreds of them every Flag Day.
