Are they making this move to stop the hemorrhaging of its membership?
It is a way for UMC money from outside the U.S. to continue to flow to the UMC HQ bodies in the U.S., while those UMC HQ bodies remain run predominately by UMC Liberals/Progessives. The Liberals/Progressives in favor of “regionalization” belief if they can keep the European, Asian and African UMC Churches in the UMC, with regionalization, they can in time “convert” the traditionalists in the regions to their Liberal/Progressive point of view. If that belief is is accurate about the situation, then in time regionalization will not stop the schism that it is meant to prevent; the traditionalists outside the U.S. will not accept continued chiding from U.S. Liberal/Progressives to adopt their Liberal/Progressive views.
second comment:
And, regionalization will make a mockery of being “one” church.
I’ll say that any denomination/sect which allows the ordination of women to ministry WILL ultimately go this route. It’s unavoidable.
