Canada Holocaust-Denier Ruling Hailed (will be deported)

TORONTO - Jewish activists Friday hailed a court ruling that allows Canada to deport German Holocaust denier Ernst Zundel to face prosecution at home.

Zundel, author of "The Hitler We Loved and Why," has been held in a Toronto jail for two years while authorities determined whether he posed a security risk to Canadian society.

Federal Court Justice Pierre Blais said Zundel's activities were not only a threat to national security, "but also a threat to the international community of nations."

Zundel, a leading proponent of white supremacy, claims the Holocaust never happened.

In his 63-page decision released in Ottawa on Thursday, Blais called Zundel a racist hypocrite and said his Toronto home was a "revolving door" for some of the world's most notorious white supremacists who have promoted violence and hatred against Jews and minorities.

"It is time for Zundel's plane to take off. This should mark a closure to the tireless efforts of many to bring Zundel to justice," said Frank Dimant, executive vice president of B'nai Brith of Canada.

B'nai Brith and other Jewish organizations in Canada and the United States have for decades followed Zundel's activities and intervened in the legal proceedings against him.

"The impact of Zundel's removal from Canada is significant," said Len Rudner, national director of community relations for the Canadian Jewish Congress. "It's an indictment of hatred, an indictment of violence."

Zundel faces prosecution in Germany for his neo-Nazi and Holocaust-denying activities. Since the late 1970s he has operated Samisdat Publishing, one of the leading distributors of Nazi propaganda and since 1995 has been a key content provider for a Web site dedicated to Holocaust denial, according to the the Anti-Defamation League.

German authorities told the Canadian Press on Friday that Zundel would be picked up and arrested as soon as he arrived back in his homeland.

Zundel's lawyer Peter Lindsay said in statement that Zundel would not appeal and expected to be deported as early as next Tuesday.

"Probably no one cares because Mr. Ernst Zundel is notorious and reviled," Lindsay said. "The powerful and the popular do not need to rely on the fairness of our legal system. The marginalized and the reviled do. Our system has failed Mr. Zundel."

Zundel spokesman Mark Weber said Zundel was being persecuted for his personal beliefs.

"The government case is based on pretext, innuendo," Weber said by phone. "The judge cites no concrete basis that he is a threat to national security. He merely points out that Zundel met with people who, arguably, might be a threat to national security. That's not a crime. It's a dangerous precedent and it's a dangerous blow against freedom for Canadians."

Born in Germany in 1939, Zundel emigrated to Canada in 1958 and lived in Toronto and Montreal until 2001. Canadian officials rejected his attempts to obtain Canadian citizenship in 1966 and 1994. He moved to Pigeon Forge, Tenn., until he was deported back to Canada in 2003 for alleged immigration violations.

Zundel claimed in court that he is a peaceful man who has no criminal record or charges against him in Canada. Lindsay, his attorney, challenged the constitutionality of the security certificate review process, saying it violates his client's right to free speech and association.

The Canadian security certificate law, passed after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the United States, allows the government to hold terrorism suspects without charge, based on secret evidence that does not have to be disclosed to a suspect's defense.

Alan Borovoy, general counsel for the Canadian Civil Liberties Association said intelligence authorities may know of criminal offenses by Zundel, which cannot be disclosed for reasons of national security, but the detainment without charge or public evidence smacks of injustice.

"Zundel, I have no difficulty saying, is a nasty, nasty character and everything I'm saying is without the slightest sympathy for him," Borovoy said. "But the process in itself is unfair."

Nevertheless, one person's right to proclaim the evils of the Holocaust depends utterly upon the equal and reciprocal right of people such as Mr. Zundel to deny the Holocaust, in whole or in part.

Wrong.

The Deniers' Real Goal - Jeff Jacoby

"DAVID IRVING suffered a humiliating defeat in a London court last week, but the judge who pronounced him "an active Holocaust denier" and "pro-Nazi polemicist" who "deliberately misrepresented and manipulated historical evidence" said nothing about him that others hadn't already said.

In 1989, the British House of Commons branded the writer "a Nazi propagandist and longtime Hitler apologist." The Times of London condemned him as "a man for whom Hitler is something of a hero and almost … an innocent and for whom Auschwitz is a Jewish deception." The renowned historian Hugh Trevor-Roper described him as a willful distorter of facts, one who "seizes on a small and dubious particle of 'evidence' " in order to brush aside much more significant evidence that disproves his claims.

Irving himself, in speeches to Holocaust-denial groups, had described Hitler as "the biggest friend the Jews had in the Third Reich." The gas chambers of Auschwitz, he wrote in the foreword to a book denying their existence, were a figment of wartime PR, a hoax concocted by the Allies.

So it is hard to fathom how Irving thought he was going to prevail in his libel suit against Deborah Lipstadt, the Emory University scholar whose 1993 book "Denying the Holocaust" called him "one of the most dangerous spokespersons for Holocaust denial." That book, he said in court on the trial's opening day, had generated "waves of hatred" against him, causing publishers to shun him. And then the man who claimed it was a lie to label him a falsifier of history told the judge this:

"I don't see any reason to be tasteful about Auschwitz. It's baloney, it's a legend.… There are so many Auschwitz survivors going around, in fact the number increases as the years go past, which is biologically very odd to say the least. I'm going to form an association of Auschwitz Survivors, Survivors of the Holocaust, and Other Liars, or ASSHOLS."

It is tempting to say that anyone who would deny that the Nazis planned and carried out the murder of six million European Jews—the most exhaustively researched, documented, and attested-to genocide in history—must be deranged or diseased. But the Holocaust-deniers are neither crazy nor sick. They know what they are doing.

Holocaust denial is above all an assault on modern Jewish history. "The central assertion for the deniers," Lipstadt writes, "is that Jews are not victims but victimizers. They 'stole' billions in reparations, destroyed Germany's good name by spreading the 'myth' of the Holocaust, and won international sympathy because of what they claimed had been done to them." The deniers' objective is to strip the survivors of the Holocaust—not only the emaciated skeletons still alive in the death camps in the spring of 1945, but the surviving remnant of the Jewish people—of their moral authority. If the Holocaust was nothing but Allied propaganda—or, as some deniers have it, a Zionist confection—then far from deserving sympathy or the safety of their own homeland, the Jews deserve only resentment and scorn.

In short, Holocaust-denial offers a rationale for anti-Semitism. That explains why the deniers and the anti-Semites are usually one. Aryan Nation, Liberty Lobby, the Institute for Historical Review, and neo-Nazis like David Duke all traffic both in Jew-hatred and denial of the Holocaust. And because devictimizing the Jews helps delegitimize Israel, Holocaust-denial has flourished among the Arabs.

In a 1999 survey of Arab public opinion, Hilal Khashan of the American University of Beirut asked 1,600 respondents whether they empathized with Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Of the 82 percent that answered no, 53 percent said the Holocaust never occurred. Another 32 percent said the Jews had plotted against Germany. Arab newspapers and television regularly label the Holocaust a Jewish hoax. The extent to which this is taken is almost comical. In a crossword puzzle in Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, the official daily of the Palestinian Authority, one answer was "Yad Vashem." The clue? "Jewish center for eternalizing the Holocaust and the lies."

What makes Holocaust-denial truly insidious, though, is not its popularity with bigots and haters, but the effect it can produce on people who are simply uninformed.

Lipstadt writes in her book about one TV talk show that decided to take up the issue. "When the show aired in April 1992, deniers were given the bulk of the time to speak their piece," she relates. "Then Holocaust survivors were brought on to try to 'refute' their comments. Before the commercial break, the host, Montel Williams, urged viewers to stay tuned so that they could learn whether the Holocaust is a 'myth or is it truth.' " Time and again, Lipstadt says, her refusal to debate Holocaust-deniers drew the same objection: Shouldn't we hear their point of view? What's wrong with airing the other side of the issue?

That is what the deniers are aiming at: Acceptance of the idea that their hateful falsehoods are a legitimate "other side" of Holocaust history. The more they repeat that the Final Solution never happened, the more some people wonder: Well, did it? Each new seed of doubt grants Adolf Hitler a posthumous victory, and makes the destruction of the Six Million a little more complete.

Willis Carto and the IHR Background Information

"The Institute for Historical Review was founded in 1979 by Lewis Brandon, who also served as the first director. (Lewis Brandon is an alias for William David McCalden, a British neo-fascist who in 1975 had founded Britain's National Party, a break-away from the notorious neo-Nazi National Front.)

The IHR operates under the umbrella of the Legion for Survival of Freedom, a registered non-profit corporation in the State of Texas.

The Institute for Historical Review is the moving force in the movement to deny the Holocaust. Its initial meeting was opened by Willis Carto, who also funds the organization, and whom some (including Dennis King, author of the 1989 work "Lyndon LaRouche and the New American Fascism") credit with starting it. No matter - with McCalden out of the way (he left the IHR, and has since died), the IHR was Carto's mouthpiece, until his forced ouster in late 1994.

Among the speakers at the 1980 convention were the Swede, Ditlieb Felderer, convicted and institutionalised in his country, and the Frenchman, Robert Faurisson, convicted in his country of libel and promoting racism and expelled from his University (though he still misrepresents himself as member of its faculty).

Willis Carto

Carto, born in 1926 in Indiana, had helped edit "Right" (a mid-fifties San Francisco newsletter for an information clearinghouse for antisemitic activities), was, inter alia, director of the far right Congress of Freedom and, briefly, organiser for the John Birch Society, from which he was later expelled.

In 1989, Dennis King provided this picture of Carto's ideological background during his discussion of the connection between Lyndon LaRouche, the NCLC (see Glossary, below), and Carto's Liberty Lobby (get pub/orgs/american/ihr/larouche.ihr):

Carto, founder of the Liberty Lobby, was by far the most successful and influential American anti-Semite of the 1970s. He was an intellectual disciple of the late Francis Parker Yockey, who roamed Europe and North America in the 1950s futilely attempting to build an underground movement. Carto met Yockey only once - in San Francisco in 1960, when Yockey was in jail awaiting trial for possession of false passports. Several days after their meeting, Yockey committed suicide in his cell by taking cyanide. Carto, already an ultrarightist, dedicated himself to carrying out Yockey's mission to save Western civilization.

This mission was set forth in Yockey's 'Imperium,' a 600-page synthesis of Nazi racialism and Oswald Spengler's philosophy of history. The book was dedicated to the 'Hero of the Second World War' (Hitler). But Carto, although devoted to Yockey's ideas, had no illusions about Yockey's tactics. Instead of engaging in inept conspiracies, he concentrated on building a political movement and developed a populist cover ideology. Although he discreetly sold 'Mein Kampf' and 'The Protocols of the Elders of Zion' by mail, he publicly denied being either a Nazi or an anti-Semite - he was merely 'anti-Zionist.'

Carto defended Hitler's heritage, not by saying the Holocaust had been a good thing, but by denying that it ever took place. He founded the Institute for Historical Review to prove that the alleged murder of six million Jews was a hoax invented by Zionists to make people feel sorry for them. Carto went so far as to publish a theory that the gas ovens at Auschwitz were really just an industrial facility for converting coal into oil, operated by happy well-fed Jewish prisoners.

Carto's Liberty Lobby, based in Washington, D.C., and nominally headed by Colonel Curtis B. Dall (a former son-in-law of President Franklin D. Roosevelt), enjoyed friendly ties with conservative congressmen. It published a weekly tabloid, 'The Spotlight,' which by 1979 enjoyed a paid circulation of almost 200,000 (Circulation peaked at 315,000 in 1981 and had fallen to about 90,000 by 1992. George & Wilcox, 260). Its articles championed income-tax rebels, protested the plight of family farmers, and promoted quack cancer cures such as laetrile. Its favorite political targets included the Rockefellers, the Rothschilds, Henry Kissenger, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the 'Zionist entity' in Palestine." (King, 39-40)

What kind of a man is Carto? The answer to that question is suggested by his writing:

There are 600 million Chinese and about 200 million Russians. All united in a determination to destroy the West. And we have been so misled that we live in a dream world - far away from reality. Hitler's defeat was the defeat of Europe. And America. How could we have been so blind? The blame, it seems, must be laid at the door of the international Jews. It was their propaganda, lies and demands which blinded the West as to what Germany was doing. --- from a letter to Norris Holt Who is using who? Who is calling the shots? History supplies the answer to this. History tells us plainly who our Enemy is. Our Enemy today is the same Enemy of 50 years ago and before - and that was before Communism. The Communists are "using" the Jews we are told ... who was "using" the Jews fifty years ago - one hundred or one thousand years ago. History supplies the answer. The Jews came first and remain Public Enemy No. 1. --- a memo to himself.

In fact, no objective Scholar can deny today that the world would be a far better place to live if Germany had won - even if it had meant the defeat of American arms!

Let us first understand who won and who lost the last war. The victors were Soviet Russia, international Communism, Red China, Israel, international Zionism, the international money manipulators (Wall Street-CFR crowd) and rising colored nationalisms the world over.

Let us now name the losers: All of the European nations, most certainly including Britain and her now non-existent Empire, the United States, White world-hegemony and the idea of the war-preventing, world-saving philosophy of nationalism and non-interference in the affairs of others. ..........

Israel and Zionism would be unknown - still a crazy dream in the minds of a few fanatics - and the secret international power of the Zionist conspiracy would not be in existence nor the manifold culture distortions which flow from this disease source into all of the western nations. ..........

Juvenile delinquency would be uncommon because the youth of America would be filled with patriotism, the natural aftermath of defeat in war, and there would be something to aspire to. Desegregation and the cultural negrification of America would be unknown. ..........

What would have been the effect of a German victory inside Germany? It is important to remember that Hitler's ambition stopped in Europe - he would have gone no further. He would have stopped if for no other reason that he yearned to build Germany into an architectural paradise. The result of German victory would have brought a true internationalism of Europe! The United Europe only dreamed of today would have been a certain result of the war. ..........

The important thing to note is that a German victory would have assured that the life-span of the White world would have been extended for many centuries more than now seems likely; indeed, for the "thousand years" promised by Hitler. --- from American Mercury, Summer 1973 By the way, the author of this last article is "E. In 1955 Carto founded Liberty Lobby as a right-wing political pressure group in Washington D.C., and has been running it ever since. The Simon Wiesenthal Center's 1994 infiltration report has this to say about Carto:

Willis Carto is the most influential professional antisemite in the United States. He is the founder of Liberty Lobby, the Institute for Historical Review, the Noontide Press (which distributes a wide range of racist and antisemitic titles), and the Populist Party, whose 1988 Presidential candidate was David Duke. Carto's name came up in nearly every conversation held between Ron Furey, S.W.C. researcher, Richard Eaton, and the neo-Nazis. Literature produced by the Carto organization is widely read by German's radical right. In addition, several of those interviewed know Mr. Carto personally. Liberty and Property

Diamond tells us that "...Carto had also run an outfit called Liberty and Property, and published a monthly newsletter called 'Right', from 1955 to 1960. Through 'Right' Carto attempted to link the segregationist Citizen's Councils with the grassroots anti-communist groups of the McCarthy era, and with some of the unsuccessful racist splinter parties of the time. As it grew, the Liberty Lobby would later downplay its Klan and neo-Nazi movement connections. But the pages of 'Right' are a goldmine of evidence on the Lobby's racist origins and agenda. Carto recommended that his readers join up with George Lincoln Rockwell's American Nazi Party, whose leader J. B. Stoner was convicted for the 1958 Klan bombing of the Bethel Baptist Church in Alabama."

Weber has taken over for Carto. These people are dangerous, and when they break the law, as Zundel did in Canada and the US, they should be thrown in jail.
