Man's hands injured in dry-ice bomb blast(Darwin Honorable Mention)

RAMONA – A 21-year-old man suffered serious injuries to his hands Thursday when a homemade dry-ice bomb blew up as he held it, the Sheriff's Department reported.

Sheriff's deputies said the device detonated about 6:30 p.m. in the parking lot of an auto parts store on Main Street, severely lacerating the victim's hands between the thumbs and forefingers.

Investigators from the Sheriff's Bomb/Arson unit learned that the victim, an assistant manager in the store, was seen assembling the bomb inside the store and had carried it out to the parking lot. He was seen shaking the device with both hands moments before it exploded, said Sheriff's Lt. Edna Ito.

Making dry-ice bombs is a felony under California law, punishable by a maximum of one year in custody and/or a $10,000 fine. – Gregory Alan Gross

Okay. Let's face the facts guys. We have all done some kind of stupid crap like these dorks, but these guys take the cake. Even in my most party-induced mood, I would never have done THAT.

We had an old truck drive shaft, that a 12 oz soda bottle fit perfectly into. Coincidentally, so did a tennis ball.

We would put water an dry ice in the bottle, load the bottle into the hollow cut-off drive shaft, then toss in the tennis ball.

It would shoot the ball all the way over a lake to the other side.

These guys did not have the correct ice/water mix.

I watched a couple of the videos on that site, pretty funny in a sick kinda way. Those guys seem to have a fetish for farting.

"LMAO swolled up! If my hand had a gaping hole in it, it would swoll up too."

That's gotta be in Texas. "swolled up" and "it ain't gonna blow" are dead giveaways.

He didn't have to shake the bottle to get that reaction. He just needed to wait for the bottle to get cold.

I am guessing that he had been waiting. He puts the dry ice in the bottle. Carries it outside. Waits... Waits... Waits some more, and then gets impatient... Gives it a little shake to help speed things along... And, well, now we know the rest of the story.

I was also part of a delinquent Boy Scout troop. We were kicked out of a jamboree for throwing our breakfast eggs...

laugh at him but this happenes even to engineers.

A cformer colleague of mine (not the inventor of buttons on jeans either) had to collect an off-gas stream from a chemical pilot plant. He used a liquid nitrogen cooled cold-trap (nothing more than a glas cylinder with an entrance and an exit, both on the top and some liquid nitrogen around it) He yielded visual ammounts of liquids. He needed to weigth the yield so he screwed on caps to the cold trap sealing it airtight (sigh). Then he wanted to get rid of the ice rapidly forming on the outside of the very cold glas cylinder. To do so he used pressurized air (sigh again). Not for long did he operate the airgun.

He knew and will probably not forget, that he found large ammounts of CO2 in his cold trap. And he learned that glas is hard to see on an x-ray screen.

Oh really? LOL thanks. It's just hysterical in the context of the bottle exploding in the genius' hands.

Cooked or uncooked?

Kicked out of a Jamboree? Has your life gone completely to hell since then or have you managed to survive?

It's just another in the long list of things that go boom, often preceeded with the phrase "hold muh beer, an'watch this!

It's a way for (usually) guys to spend some time male bonding.

It's a stunt that any mischievous teenage boy with a little scientific savvy could think up. Key is mischievous. Fill a breakable container with a pressurized gas to the point of breaking... not exactly Einsteinian skills required to engineer that.

LOL! (uncooked, of course...:) What fun is it throwing cooked eggs unless you want to kill someone or dispose of the food???)

Ahhh. Most teenage boys are somewhat brain damaged, to a degree. Aint no gettin around it. Sigh. We are lucky ANY of us make it to adulthood. Alas, some of us don't.

This reminds me of a guy I knew when I was young. He was about one brick shy of a full load and one day he shot at his cat at close range with a muzzleloader that didn't have a ball in it, just powder, thinking it wouldn't hurt the cat. When he told me about it he said " I don't know what happened, the cat just frizzed up and died!". Some people have no understanding of physics at all.:)

"I have no idea where to buy dry ice"

Ask at your Safeway or Kroger store

...tho' I can claim no first-hand experience, I've heard it is sorta cool/cruel to toss Alka-Seltzer (or Fizzies) tablets up in the air into a bunch of seagulls. Then watch that bad bird blow up...go BOOOM!!!

In fact, a variant of the soda bottle dry ice bomb was whipped up by Alexander Scott (Bill Cosby) in an episode of the old TV show ''I Spy'', thus anticipating MacGyver by about 25 years. As I recall (could easily be wrong), it involved a shoe box, dry ice, a little ammonium-based fertilizer, and a cigar.

I am against laws that hinder the process of natural selection.

If you don't mind. I'm going to borrow this one for a bumper sticker.

Priceless.
