I'm single, childless and alone. Feminism has failed me and my generation, writes PETRONELLA WYATT

Every Monday I meet with a group of female friends in a London restaurant. We sit at a table near the window and discuss our lives.

We have many things in common. We are all in our mid-50s and highly educated career women. But there is a vacuum in our lives. We are all single and childless.

I increasingly feel, as do many of my intimates, that feminism has failed our generation. I grew up with its beliefs. No, strike that. I was force-fed them.

By the age of 13, Christmas presents from my Women's Lib aunt were books by Gloria Steinem and Simone de Beauvoir, considered the mother of modern feminism. (My aunt was one of those militants who had famously disrupted the 1970 Miss World contest).

My peers and I watched Mary Poppins, idolising the determinedly single nanny (never noticing the occasional sadness behind her eyes), and sympathising with suffragette Mrs Banks, while wondering why she didn't leave her dullard of a husband.

So why did “they” freak out when Harrison Butker made his speech?

The feminism I was spoon-fed in my youth made the error of telling members of my sex to behave and think like men.

Without wandering too far off-topic, I might point out that telling young men they should behave and think like women isn't working out any better.

Not to dismiss your point of view, because I’m not.

My mom was a stay at home mom, but we had a family business, so she helped with that. She volunteered at church, school, and in the community.

However, when I was coming of age, I totally respected and looked up to my best friend’s mom. She was a working mom. She completed her PH.D. in nuclear physics, when we were in 6th or 7th grade. She taught math at the junior college level. She had 7 children. I thought she had it all, and maybe she did.

I was trying hard to follow in her footsteps as far as a career went, but I was more into the biological sciences than physics. After getting married, we discovered I was unexpectedly pregnant within just a few months. We weren’t planning it that way, but God has different ideas.

I thought I would return to work to pursue my career goals within a few months, but life changed again. Long story short, I never went back to my field of interest. Taking care of one, then two, and then three children seemed to take a lot of my time and attention. So I started doing what my own mom did. I volunteered at the church, the kids’ school, and in the community. I supported my husband in his career.

I don’t regret my choice. It was the right one for me and my family. I was often, VERY often, belittled for not pursuing my career, and was treated like a third class citizen by other women. I still am talked down to by many of them. Too bad. I know my worth, and it’s not dependent on what others think of me.

I know getting married and having children isn’t the right thing for everyone, but it was the right thing for me. That women’s lib thing was just a stepping stone in my development, and one that didn’t fit me for very long.

Good for you! Goals change. That’s just reality. When you had the opportunity to see what a life as a mother would be, you made a rational choice that was the right one for you. Be proud of your choice. It was YOUR choice.

No one should ever put you down because of your life choices. And you fulfilled that choice cheerfully and found opportunities to make the world better in ways that satisfied you. Well done!

I took my first masters in education because it was $1000 and supposedly took a year. Actually mine took longer because I hated exams and did a thesis instead on adapting Backus’ Reduction Languages to teaching computers to children because it didn’t have variables. Total disaster, not to mention that jelly beans as variables meant that the values kept reducing. Worked great up until 5th grade when you needed a PhD to go any further. Sigh.

But one of the women in our group told of how she was told that she was one of the smartest and that it was her OBLIGATION to have many smart children. I think she had 7. And then society changed and she was ATTACKED for having so many socially irresponsible children.

Society is often dictatorially stupid and the only one you can really trust is yourself and your own instincts. If you see a life path and your body relaxes when you think of it, it seems it’s a good path to take. When the path gets too hard, you either get inventive or you take a branching path. But it’s your choice. Not society’s. Only you know what your right path is and you only need to listen to those who support you, and not to anyone who wants to put you down.

She chose that lifestyle. Stop blubbering.

My new Granddaughter arrived this morning. Healthy, mom in recovery, a 2nd C-section delivery. Her Elder sister was one too.

These women are not incels. They have affairs, and abortions, with married men such as Boris Johnson.

I’m 54, been happily married for over 20 years, we have 4 cats (adopted strays were unavoidable) and a dog - we have raised 3 well-educated daughters (though their politics are NOT of my doing) and presently finishing up a son. I’m quite happy with my life and hold nothing against you for yours ... we are all different.

I do feel sorry for her because she is a victim.

Same. My now divorced doctor daughter, normally a sane woman, is similarly victimized by feminism and ‘green’ politics. Just gotta love them, but any attempt at changing their views without their being burned just makes you the enemy.

Never have i met a person who truly understands the concept of fire that hasn’t held a lighted match until SONOFABITCH, flames burn their fingers

Correct. But we should encourage 90% of the population to have children, three or four of them.

You know, if you’re a responsible parent, and raise good kids that don’t sponge off of others, then I don’t care how many you have. Don’t stop at 3 or 4. Keep going! Just do your job as a parent.
