Any effort to rectify this problem has to leave out anyone already here and completely focus on stopping future illegal immigration;

The Census Bureau's own estimates clearly demonstrate that amnesties don't solve the problem of illegal immigration.

Although 2.7 million of the estimated 5 million illegal aliens living in the country in 1986 were given amnesty (legal permanent residence), the new estimates (2000)indicated that they have been entirely replaced by new illegal aliens and that by census year 2000 the illegal population was 3 million larger than before the last amnesty.

Long story short, and in other words - it just doesn't work.

The preference of the congressmen was also to keep the voting record on this issue from the roll call by holding a voice vote. Only at the insistence of one representative - Tom Tancredo, did the House actually decide to finally record the vote.

Would someone like to explain to the class what exactly that was all about as well?

Somewhere along the line, the problem also lies with the legislative branch, not just the INS. Both the congress and senate have failed to provide either money or the necessary political support the INS has needed over the years.

Amnesties have nothing to do with controlling our borders. An amnesty won't solve our border problems; it will, however, help to prevent future economic, social, cultural...problems -- big time problems.

Although 2.7 million of the estimated 5 million illegal aliens living in the country in 1986 were given amnesty (legal permanent residence), the new estimates (2000) indicated that they have been entirely replaced by new illegal aliens and that by census year 2000 the illegal population was 3 million larger than before the last amnesty.

After this amnesty, if approved, new illegals will enter and another amnesty wil happen under Dem OR Repub control of Congress/White House. Amnesties can not stop illegal immigration; only tight border control and the enforcement of strong immigration laws can do that.

Long story short, and in other words - it just doesn't work.

Apples and oranges don't work.
