For anyone interested: a few weeks ago, I overheard several very white people in our local Borders chatting in a language I didn't recognize. Now, I know what every European language sounds like, and about a dozen Asian, but this had me completely confused. So, I introduced myself to them, and just told them their language had me confused. They quite amiably informed me they were from South Africa, and I was hearing Afrikaans (not for the first time, but it sounds different in person than on television). The South offers them a place of refuge with open arms.
