    Daily Fetched ^ | April 17, 2024 | Jason Walsh
The German transport minister said he will soon be enforcing a complete ban on driving at weekends so the country can meet its ‘net zero’ targets and fight climate change. Volker Wissing said that meeting carbon emissions reduction targets will be impossible unless laws are changed to restrict people’s movements and car ownership. According to Wissing, the law would need to be changed by mid-July. Wissing wrote in a letter to coalition parliamentary group leaders: “A corresponding reduction in traffic performance would only be possible through restrictive measures that are difficult to communicate to the population, such as nationwide and...
  • EXCLUSIVEIt's Wokehammer! Games Workshop engulfed in gender row with fans after it said Warhammer squadron that was previously thought of as men-only has 'always had females'

A 'woke' gender row has broken out among Games Workshop fantasy fans after women were added to an army squadron for the first time. Bosses behind the Warhammer game have introduced a female character to one of its most popular table-top battalions whose devotees include film star Henry Cavill. But some men are furious at the move, insisting that the 'Adeptus Custodes' brigade has always been all-male and any changes should have been done differently. A new edition of Warhammer 40,000 fantasy fiction introduces a character named 'Custodian Calladyce Taurovalia Kesh' - and using female pronouns for her. Long-time fans...

Medieval fire arrows were real! So I followed the old books, made some and tested them in every way I could think of. We have loads of old manuscripts, pictures, drawings, fire arrow heads and recipes of fire arrows but because some people haven't looked at the old information and can't make them work, lots of people think they were a myth. You see them everywhere in films and computer games so it is easy to dismiss them as a modern popular culture affectation - they were as real as you are. So this film is an exhaustive description of...

From the November 2021 issue of Car and Driver. What's blasting from your car speakers, and more important, how does it sound? For sound-system engineers at the audio-equipment manufacturer Bose, a playlist is more than tracks that slap. To test stereos, they need songs representing a variety of sounds and recording techniques to make sure new systems can re-create a song with the depth of the original recording. To have a common reference point, Bose engineers all over the globe share a master playlist. "Every system engineer knows these tracks inside and out," says Mark Armitage, head of the acoustical-engineering...

No more sneaking in with your friends. It's about to become harder to get a table at the Costco food court than at a Michelin-starred restaurant. In recent months, Costco has taken a more drastic approach to ensuring only actual members are able to get all those sweet, sweet perks. And now, Costco is taking aim at freeloaders hoping to snag a $1.50 hot dog at the food court sans membership card. In March, a Reddit user shared a sign in the r/Costco community that they spotted at their local Costco in Orlando, Florida. The sign read: “Effective April 8, 2024,...

  • Easter tradition under scrutiny: The health risks of live animal gifts

Giving live animals as Easter gifts is an age-old tradition, but this practice raises serious concerns among public health officials and animal rights advocates. Despite repeated warnings about the risks associated with this practice, hundreds of illnesses and even deaths, both human and animal, continue to occur each year. From Salmonella outbreaks linked to live poultry to animal abandonment, the pitfalls of gifting bunnies, chicks, and ducklings remain prevalent. As Easter approaches, experts urge the public to opt for alternative gifts like candy and toys to avoid both health risks and animal welfare issues. In 2023, the CDC and public...

Anyone out there own a welder? I’d like to hear from you about what you have, how you have it connected to power, process (mig, stick, tig) and your experiences overall. I stick-welded in vocational school years ago, and loved it. But, I never had the power or hook up to get one at my house. I do now. 70 amp breaker should do with 4 or 3 gauge wire from the breaker panel to the outlet right below the panel. I’m leaning towards one of the Everlast welder models, either the Typhoon 500 tig/stick, or Power I-Mig 353dpi mig/stick....

Why even order a Cybertruck if you can't immediately flip it for twice what you paid?Even before deliveries of the Tesla Cybertruck began, the electric automaker made it clear that it would be a long time before it was produced in anything other than extremely limited quantities. That meant that if you were one of the few who had pulled yourself up by your bootstraps hard enough, you stood to make quite a bit of money auctioning yours off to the highest bidder. The latest failed attempt to do so, this time on Cars & Bids, has us worried, though....

A UC Berkeley professor is being pilloried after telling students to “get out of the Bay Area” if they want a girlfriend. SNIP “If you want a girlfriend, get out of the Bay Area. Almost everywhere else on the planet is better for that. I’m not kidding at all. You’ll be shocked by the stark differences in behavior of women in places where women are plentiful versus their behavior within artillery distance of San Jose and San Francisco.” Shewchuk’s comments were in response to a student who was asking for advice about finding work in the Bay Area and dating...

Dodge is pushing muscle cars into a new era — with the unveiling of the world's first and only electric muscle car to date. The term refers to the fact that the Charger is now being offered in both electrified and combustion-powered forms. Despite going electric, the Charger will remain as the world's quickest and most powerful muscle car. Two electrified Charger models will be offered — the 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona Scat Pack which delivers...

Some cars just attract a certain type of buyer, don't they?A few weeks ago we talked about cars that looked dumb, but that doesn’t necessarily mean their owners are dummies themselves. That got me thinking: What cars are only driven by idiots? What cars are driven by the sort of people who can only breathe with their mouths wide open and their knuckles dragging on the ground? It’s a question that has kept me up at night since I came up with it yesterday, and now I want to know what you think. Whether that’s a wise idea or...

Is the inside surface of clear copper tubing, such as used in refrigeration systems, anodized or have some other finish applied to it? It appears to be impossible to solder to, even using acid flux, unless the surface is thoroughly sanded (or use steel wool or a wire brush). The inside surface "as is" looks clean, with no darkening or oxidation, but is smooth, lacking the tiny scratches of sanding with high grit sandpaper, or using steel wool on it.

The National Weather Service issued a flood warning and asked people in north Monterey County to seek higher ground. I don't think getting on a kayak is what they had in mind. One person on Kennedy Street in Salinas decided to make the best of a rainy situation. Shawnie Randle took the video (shown right above) of her neighbor kayaking and said they had a blast. Her neighbor referred to the flooding as Kennedy Lake.
