SpaceX has filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission seeking "special temporary authority" to recover the first stage of a Falcon 9 rocket after it is launched from Vandenberg.
The request is being made to the FCC because the operation would require communication transmission from an antenna at the landing site to the rocket after landing.
The application was filed on July 4th. SpaceX is asking for a six-month window of operation: September 5, 2018 - March 5, 2019.

In 1960 I was at Vandenberg working on the Titans. It’s been so long I don’t remember the wind or fog. I remember standing on a hill above an Atlas site and listening to Maseroski hit his home run.
So Elon Musk wants to suck in more taxpayer funds by using a military site with military equipment to land his toys.
SpaceX is a private venture. Build your own damn landing site.
How do you know SpaceX doesn’t pay a fee? Do you make the same demand of ULA? Boeing is the world leader in subsidies.
At least SpaceX is building their own spaceport in Texas.
They’ve already done a successful landing in a 50mph crosswind, on a freakin’ tossing barge in the middle of the freakin’ ocean.
