Survey: Military binge drinking drops, but this service stood out in a bad way

About one-third of the service personnel surveyed met the criteria indicating hazardous drinking and possible alcohol use disorder, with 30 percent reporting that they binge drank in the past month. Among Marines, that figure jumped to 42.6 percent.

Binge drinking is defined as more than five drinks for men or more than four for women in one sitting, according to the report, issued by Rand and based on a survey that was conducted from late 2015 to early 2016.

That rate was down from 33.1 percent in the previously reported survey from 2011, but it’s still high enough to cause concern, researchers said. Drinking problems could be addressed by shifting the culture and climate surrounding alcohol use, such as communicating disapproval of heavy drinking and changing on-base alcohol and sales policies, according to the report.

They should have visited any club in Subic during the 80’s, or taken a ride back to the piers in the ‘cattle car’, where there were never more than two wheels on the ground at once. Somehow, we all survived.

“He suddenly was labeled as having a drinking problem.”

Work is the bane of the drinking class.

One of the effects of shutting down the club system DoD wide.

At least the officer and NCO clubs let you blow off steam in a social setting with your leaders and peers in a more structured way.

The reason that my unit was disbanded was said to be that we drank too much.

were these Marines grunts by any chance?

Lajes had Navy, Air Force and Army permanent party units but as far as I know any Marines were just passing through. They may have been flight crew on a Marine C-130 though.

Wait, are you saying there are no more NCO or Officers clubs? How do the officers hold their balls?

Lajes 27 months. I used to watch the Navy guys pour beers into funnels attached to garden hoses while on the 2nd floor and the guys on the ground try to drink it faster than the other guy next to him.

Could the increase in PTSD be a result of decreased drinking?

“Fire-brewed Stroh’s!”

Stroh’s is the first beer I could ever stand to drink. Had it at a family get-together in Ohio.

We spent three weeks in Alaska back in the winter of 1969. My crew chief was drunk the entire time. He never went to Fairbanks or explored the local area.
When we got our aircraft ready to leave, he was complaining about how he had been in Alaska THREE WEEKS and had never even seen the Northern Lights!

I said to him...”Well, look up.” His words were...”Well I’ll be da*ned!”

There were the Northern Lights in all their glory, just like they had been for the three weeks we were there.

“Five drinks over the course of a barbecue that starts around lunchtime and ends after the sunset sounds like light-to-moderate consumption.”

A 6-pack and a Twinkie is my favorite seven course meal.
