Ask Ethan: Would An Alien Civilization Classify Earth As An 'Interesting' Planet?
Forbes ^ | 10/19/19 | Ethan Siegel

All across the Universe, trillions of galaxies can be seen, with each one typically containing billions and billions of stars. Here on Earth, life not only arose, thrived, and became complex and differentiated, but intelligent, technologically advanced, and even spacefaring, to a degree. But these last advances — taking us into the space and information ages — are extremely recent, and space is enormous. If an alien civilization saw us, would we even appear interesting from their perspective? Tayte Taliaferro wants to know, asking:

"I was thinking about the projection of light through space. My curtain was open and I saw the stars and something from a book popped into my head. It had said that the stars we see are basically reruns. The light is from so long ago, we don't even know if the star still exists or not."

“This is Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz of the Galactic Hyperspace Planning Council,” the voice continued. “As you will no doubt be aware, the plans for development of the outlying regions of the Galaxy require the building of a hyperstpatial express route through your star system, and regrettably your planet is one of those scheduled for demolition. The process will take slightly less than two of your Earth minutes. Thank you.”

“There’s no point in acting all surprised about it. All the planning charts and demolition orders have been on display in your local planning department in Alpha Centauri for fifty of your Earth years, so you’ve had plenty of time to lodge any formal complaint and it’s far too late to start making a fuss about it now.”

I think we’d have seen them already if ours was an interesting planet. I think we scare the hell out of them, so they don’t come around.

Of course it's interesting. Earth is a marvel of living organisms. One of them has spilt the atom and travelled beyond the confines of the lower atmosphere to another small planetoid, leaving crude, technological artifacts, and has broadcast it's existence via primitive understanding of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Puppies and kittens are cute. The human species is cute/funny to watch.

Considering the shape humanity is currently in? Bring it. Maybe the cockroaches will do a better job.

I was raised in an era when dogs were dogs and cats were cats....no one ran to the vet every time one of them sneezed...if real sick, they would walk off into the woods and go to ‘Rainbow Bridge’.
Dogs ran the neighborhoods and did their business, cats the same...I am NOT suggesting it was ‘better’, that is just the way it was and I do sort of like not having to ‘watch where you step’.

Now in some major cities the dogs are tethered and the owner/guardian walk them and pick up after them and am sure some stiff fines if you don’t follow that.

HOWEVER, now the people are doing their business where it is convenient etc etc.

Like J Seinfeld pointed out

If you are walking your dog and he takes a dump and you clean it up (as required) what are those Martians that just landed supposed to think and who do YOU think they would think was ‘in charge’?

Not any time soon, and perhaps not within a few hundred years, and perhaps not in a few thousand or a few million years, but....

In time, we will discover that....

THIS IS IT!!!

WE ARE THE ONLY INTELLIGENT LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE...

and perhaps the only life anywhere in the universe.

Civilizations rise, civilizations fall, but cockroaches are forever!

I would prefer that any aliens that watched us would think that we were “boring” - and not “delicious”.

It WAS better. Step in it now and then and you learn to pay attention. Dang whippersnappers today walking around staring into a little screen need to step in a little poop to get their attention. Get off my lawn!

I forget which talk show host was saying that maybe we are the “bad neighborhood” in the galaxy with every yokel with a shotgun and F-22 pilot taking pot shots at them when they drop by. If you listen closely you can hear the “clunk” from alien pilots hitting their locks when they fly by.

Come on now. You can’t leave us hanging like that. Either confess you pulled it from some old Heinlein book or admit that are a budding SF writer.

But in either case, well done.
