I got a nice dose of reality with Free Republic off the air this morning.
By 8 am I searched, "Is Free Republic Down" and it took me to a site that confirmed, that it was down for everyone.
By 9 am, insidiously, I noticed a frontal headache and a little anxiety.
By 10 I was having trouble concentrating and getting a bit restless and short with co-workers,
By 11 there was some paranoia with thoughts like "What if Free Republic never comes back up?" and "I think I'm hooked on this site", and "What if I can't recover from it's loss."
I tried diving back into my work, thinking the diversion would help but by noon the symptoms and signs had worsened.
By then I noticed light hand tremors and diaphoresis of the palms.
By 1 pm my speech was slurred. It was 72 degrees in the office, but my teeth were chattering, and I felt cold.
The tremors grew worse, and I could feel the sweat spreading to my arms and back, my feet tingling, and I was getting weak.
By 2 I was getting truly worried, thinking that I might have to go into detox somewhere.
Then miraculously, the site was back up, before I had to call 911.
I'm better now as I sit in my office wrapped in a blanket, sipping weak herbal tea, realizing how dependent my mental well being relies on Free Republic and interacting with all my Freeper Friends.
That's a good thing.
Maybe now's a time for those out there who are not monthly donors to donate, something, anything. It would be a terrible thing to lose our site, especially this year, when Trump needs us.

That was the beginning of trouble until the mid 20s.
I got a MONTH of no going outside, no magazines, no TV...
Just studying and contemplating.

If you’re ever driving on I-95 in mid to northern Maine at night, watch the hell out for ‘em ‘cause they’re about 8’ high and not much afraid of cars.
Wasn’t the moose story from Sweden? In Norway, so I’m guessing in Sweden too - what we call an elk they call it a moose. So your sign is probably correct. (They also would call “our” moose and elk.)
I believe you’re right about that old FR legend originating from Scandinavia somewhere.
And if memory serves (tho it often doesn’t these days ;-) moose are native to North America, so yea, maybe that meme’s correct after all .. lol

Wow! I sure picked a good day to go to bed at 6:30 AM and get up at 3 PM...
So I’ll have to just take your word that the “shut-down” really happened... /s
Depends on what a sheltered life is.
If not having traveled much means sheltered, then I’ve led a sheltered life.
Not opening your mind to new experiences too much (the legal sort) then i’ve led a somewhat sheltered life.
If various low level crimes committed into one’s early to mid 20s makes one non sheltered, then that’s me.
The first two are far more worthwhile endeavors.
I have a feeling you are much less sheltered than me.
