Weekly Garden Thread - May 30-June 5, 2020
May 30, 2020 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 05/30/2020 5:51:59 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

This week, I hand-sawed 17 Norway Maples down. In the forest out back. In a 1/2 acre area, state property. Will definitely improve the outlook for native saplings.

Azaleas & Rhododendroms bloomed.

G’morning, Diana:

Our pepper plants are sporting thumb-sized peppers where a week ago, only blossoms existed.
More good news: Mother wood duck still looking after five baby duckies from the seven that hatched a week or ten days ago. Damned turtles are waking up...

All else is well at the big lake.

fingerlakes ny here (upstate)
poppies and strawberries are blooming, asparagus has been hit hard by asparagus beetles, harvested a couple crops of rhubarb. Peonies are getting ready to bloom. My lone lilac I planted last year has already bloomed.

Re-black plastic mulched my smaller veg garden out back. critters already dug out an ancho pepper plant!
Growing herbs, morning glories, brandywine tomatoes, charleston grey watermelon, cukes, okra.

We got another couple or three inches of rain here in Central Missouri this past week. The ground in most places is completely saturated. The Missouri River came up 12’ over the last five days at Jefferson City.

My garden drains nicely, however, so I should be able to get the rest of my tomato plants in the dirt this weekend. Also have pepper plants that need to go in.

Been eating fresh green salad for the last couple weeks. The collards and other stuff I sowed a few weeks ago are mostly up and starting to look like something. Cukes may have to be reseeded. I’ll give them a couple more days before I decide on that.

The rain finally stopped here in Missouri Ozarks. Mid 70s heading to high 80s this coming week. Time to plant some warm weather crops.

Thanks for the PING!
Central Konnecticut - everything went in last weekend - peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, summer and winter squash, bush beans.
Oh, forgot potatoes - they go in tomorrow.

Garlic is up - waiting on scapes, rhubarb is just coming back up, strawberries are maybe a week away and raspberries a month.

And two of our three hens are broodie - that's a pain.

The recent heat (100+) in the Norcal valleys slowed everything down here.

While there are blossoms on the tomatoes and peppers, fruit didn’t set and many blooms wasted.

Plums only need about 2-3 more weeks for a bountiful harvest.
