The Atlantic: Internet Porn Is Killing the Environment
Breitbart Tech ^ | 14 Dec 2017 | Charlie Nash

The Atlantic claims online pornography is killing the environment at a greater pace than physical pornography ever did, in an article this week.

“So many people watch porn online that the industry’s carbon footprint might be worse now that it was in the days of DVDs and magazines,” declared Atlantic writer Matt Kessler. […]

… “Using a formula that Netflix published on its blog in 2015, Nathan Ensmenger, a professor at Indiana University who is writing a book about the environmental history of the computer, calculates that if Pornhub streams video as efficiently as Netflix (0.0013 kWh per streaming hour), it used 5.967 million kWh in 2016.”

Kessler then added that, “For comparison, that’s about the same amount of energy 11,000 light bulbs would use if left on for a year. And operating with Netflix’s efficiency would be a best-case scenario for the porn site.” …

Some professors have way too much spare time on their hands, too much research money, and some of the wackiest ideas about what is relevant in this world to be in academia.

Why not just buy a copy of Playboy and stay home with it? You’ll use less energy studying it.

The Atlantic, now an expert publication on “pornography”. Whatever happened to real serious news stories like they once published?

What will they do next to up their circulation, have centerfolds of Miss Environment of the month, au natural, as nature intended it?

I would think fakebook and twitter and instagram and selfies and internet dating sites/tinder and all that crap take up more power. I see a lot of women glued to thsi crap on their phones all damn day.

Oh yeah, right. Tats, noise rings, and black nail polish do it for me.

These lightbulbs of which he speaks are 5 Watt luminescence, about the same as a candle. So, 11,000 birthday candles burning for a year provides enough energy to run Pornhub for a year. Who knew?
Think what a California forest fire could energize.

There might be vast engineering miscalculations here all right. One does not attribute to each and every Facebook page the collective electrical usage of all Facebook servers. Whether it’s porn or grand opera, the machines do not know.

Did the science guy take in account all that one is not doing while they look at porn.
Not driving, not eating meat, not burning their tire pile etc.
Fascinating, I think he’s just having some geeky fun.

How much electricity and printed matter has been wasted spinning the non-event of "man-man global warming" and "the immediate need for carbon credits/electric cars/etc."?

Have another rally and litter the earth one more time, Commies.

For the record, Kinsey’s own porn stash is archived at Indiana University (which just happens to be the school this “scientist” works at).

So ask yourself, who is really behind Obama’s “net neutrality”?

Surprising to find a wacko leftist concerned about porn. But it is only because porn viewers use too much electricity which causes “global warming” and is going to burn the planet up.

Not for any moral reason, mind you.

While we’re on the subject, leftists use billions of watt-hours of electricity just by existing. Let’s invite them to not exist.

He does not care about porn or the environment, it just gives his pedestrian mind something to pontificate about.

He just likes to pester people. Ignore him, or ridicule him, do not engage him.

This is the myth of concentration.

You add up the totals of worldwide production of anything, and you come up with a pretty big number. But that number is irrelevant. The consumption of the distributed devices the view this material is a thousand times higher. But that good on a hundred million different electric bills and nobody adds it up.

And to compare this to the physical production and distribution of media is just silly. They are not even in the same ballpark.

For comparison, that’s about the same amount of energy 11,000 light bulbs would use if left on for a year

For further comparison, that's an array of 100 by 110 lightbulbs, or one of the smaller flashing signs in Las Vegas...yeah, the environment is howling with pain...
