We need to arm the Kurds (to the teeth) and do it directly.

Yup, as I said a while back the Kurds would do well with about 600 of our latest Stinger & 5,000 of the latest Javelin antitank missiles to swat down every Turk entering their space. For far too long these turks have been oppressing everything in reach.

Under which constitutional provision are we allowed to provide military foreign aid? Why are we getting involved?

They were not attacked and therefore NATO has no obligation to protect them. Erdogan and his thugs are the aggressors and should be thrown back across their border with heavy losses.

Your comment makes the most sense yet. The word “pretext” explains it.

My fear is:

Erdogan and Russia will make a deal over Afrin and the Kurds will be the losers. How is yet to be seen. It could begin with the Assad forces taking charge in Afrin - to insure the Kurds are not. That linkage could expand from Afrin when it is convenient to Assad and Russia. The Kurds having rid ISIS for everyone’s benefit, may yet be defending themselves against Assad and Russia.

***************************************************************
The Islamist Erdogan is also using it as a pretext to take over Syrian land that formerly was part of the Ottoman Empire. He has substantial territorial ambitions.

We are not bound to defend Turkey from the consequences of ITS invasion of a sovereign neighboring nation’s territory.
