No doubt. However, the true innovators of substance in the past have done it without billions and billions of government subsidies. Musk is far too dependent on government largess. It distorts true innovation when you look to arm chair dummies for your riches.
Let’s give Musk credit where credit is due. He at least so far has not been shown to be a hardcore leftist or sjw zealot like so many of his silicon valley peers. He’s accomplished a lot (with help from his employees doing the heavy lifting like all SV moguls) and seems genuinely more concerned with advancing humanity or at least becoming revered by advancing humanity rather than trying to destroy it through supporting leftist policies like the rest of the above mentioned SV billionare stooges.
The only gov't money SpaceX has rec'd has been for services rendered, and some hundreds of millions for Raptor development (comparable with the long history of other defense spending for missile development). SpaceX' development of Falcon 1, Falcon 9, and Falcon Heavy, was all paid for by Musk's money and those of underwriters such as Google. So, no, not "billions and billions of gavernment subsidies".

Where did Musk get all that money?? Tesla electric car subsidies, over $4 billion worth and counting.
Musk is sometimes more than a bit loopy - most geniuses are - and he’s got quite some more work to do to get a 100x cost reduction in putting items in orbit.
Still, SpaceX’s progress to date is impressive.

Most of Tesla’s money is deposits on cars to be delivered sometime in the future.

Most of Tesla’s money comes from selling equity and bonds, just like other companies.
But the deposits do make for a nice interest free loan.

Investors are lined up to buy equity in SpaceX.
Those who have flipped are labeled as conspiracy theorists. They are effectively marginalized through ridicule.

I'm surprised that a coder doesn't remember that Musk was the founder of PayPal. That's where his first fortune came from.

Good Lord, the general physics of returnable rockets is not even that difficult. (Just give up a little payload capability — on return most of the braking is aerodynamic, and then burn a small fraction of the fuel needed to send the 1st stage up, to accomplish the landing. Hint: Most of the fuel onboard @ launch is expended to accelerate... fuel — the returning rocket is relatively light.)
The tricky part is control for landing, which takes good computers properly programmed. As if such don’t exist in 2018?

You are dwelling on detail and missing the bigger picture.
NASA is a propaganda agency. SpaceX is a propaganda agency exempt from FOIA requests (that is why it exists).
All of it is designed to hide God, to make you believe that you are merely an unimportant speck in a vast universe, when, in fact, you are God’s special creation.
Here is where you should focus your attention:
The Gospel in six words:
Created (God created you)
Loved (God loves you)
Sinned (You are separated from God by sin, your own or inherited. The penalty for sin is death.)
Bought (God sent His son to pay the penalty (death) for your sin.)
Believed (You must believe that He has done this for you, both mind and heart. Romans 10:9-10. Accept the gift of life that your Creator is offering to you.)
Saved (If you believe, accepting God’s gift in true faith, you will be saved.)
Blessings to you and your loved ones.
Do not put off the gift that God is offering to you.
If you do not choose life, what is the alternative?
