Welcome to the Golden Era of budget cars. Think about it — at one time a small budget meant buying a small car with limited equipment and even more limited style. Things are different now. Not only do inexpensive cars come decently equipped but some are even considered cool. Prices are MSRP (sticker price) plus destination charge.

For $20K, I bought a used Chrysler 300C AWD with every option. It only had 25,000 miles on it and I have 10 times the car of any on that list.

You might say you have ten time the car, but for the same money you could have a KIA Soul and enough Hamster costumes for your whole family to wear when you drive it.

My mother bought the Honda Fit after totalling her Civic. It didn’t take her long to hate it, a most uncomfortable ride. I hated it before driving a block. Rough, weak, flimsy feeling car.

Mom wondered if we wanted to buy it...no thanks, Mom.

I got a Subaru WRX for 20.5k with 4600 on the Odometer. It was a Subaru mfg demo and I’m the original owner. The car is fantastic and runs like a rocket. I wouldn’t trade it for a 12.5k Kia if they paid me 8k. Well ok..maybe but still.

My sub $20K car was a used 3 year old Town Car with about 18K miles on it.

It’s a boat with a very comfortable ride and it looks quite gangsta.

For my $20K I just got a 2006 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab NISMO loaded with under 30K on the clock. Considering I traded in a Frontier with over 200K on it and no issues, I think I did OK.

I just bought a 2008 Hyundai Azera Limited for 15,500 with 30K miles & perfectly clean. I really had no intention on that day to buy but I spoke up & said 15K & I’ll take. We settled at 500 more. New lists for 31K & this looks like the new ones. I’m happy.

Geez, I just skimmed the list. The top 10 reads like a list of "Most likely to get crushed like a Beer Can in anything more serious than a parking lot fender-bender."

And, for those who would like to flame me because "Studies have shown that a SmartForTwo is just as safe in a collison as your average passenger car" .....save it. And take a course in Physics, while you're at it.

Fifty years ago, basically-equipped cars cost $2500 and lasted 100,000 miles. Now, I can buy a car with 100,000 miles on it for the equivalent of eight hundred 1960 dollars and get a much better-equipped, better handling and far more economical car that’ll last another 150,000 miles. Cars really have improved, nostalgia notwithstanding.

Spokesman: These days, everyone’s talking about the Hyundai, and the Yugo. Both nice cars, if you’ve got $3,000 or $4,000 to throw around. But, for those of us whose name doesn’t happen to be Rockefeller, finally there’s some good news - a car with a sticker price of $179. That’s right, $179. The name of the car?

Adobe. The sassy new Mexican import that’s made out of clay. German engineering and Mexican know-how helped create the first car to break the $200 barrier. At this price, you might not expect more than reliable transportation - but, brother, you get it! Extra features: like the custom contour seats, or the beverage-gripping dash. And the money you save isn’t exactly small change!

Jingle:
“Hey, hey, we’re Adobe!
The little car that’s made out of clay!
We’re gonna save you some money
that you can spend in some other way!
Hey, hey, we’re Adobe!
Hey, hey, we’re Adobe!
Adobe!”

Spokesman: Adobe. You can buy a cheaper car. But I wouldn’t recommend it!

Announcer: Not approved for street use in some states. No warranty either expressed or implied. All sales final.

Fit extremely popular vehicle in Japan . Our college age daughter just bought a new one a couple of weeks ago . She loves it and so does my wife . I don’t drive . Workmanship first rate . Very impressive car for the price .
