Three-Quarters of Congressmen Support Auditing the Federal Reserve, so Why Isn't It Law?

You would think that a bill supported by nearly three-quarters of the legislature should be a breeze to become law. Not so in today's House of Representatives. The legislative system has become so convoluted and corrupted that not even the legislators know what is in the bills, where the bills are being written, or what bills are pending. Given the current system, it should come as no surprise that a bill which would allow the Congress to audit the Federal Reserve should be stalled in a committee and will soon die.

H.R. 1207, the Federal Reserve Transparency Act of 2009, was introduced in February of 2009 by Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) and has gained an astonishing 320 cosponsors, which represents just over 73% of the 435 members of the House of Representatives -- a number sufficient to surpass even a presidential veto. The bill is atypical of most congressional legislation in that it is just three pages with a single goal, devoid of pork, side projects, or other unsavory trappings of the legislative process. The bill simply requires the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve to submit a full audit of their activities to Congress before the end of 2010. This is in stark contrast to the very limited audit powers that the General Accounting Office (GAO) has currently over the Federal Reserve. Knowing the simplicity and the obvious support the bill has, it should be a breeze to zip through Congress -- but Congress simply no longer functions.

This alone is enough reason to switch party control of Congress. Republican chairman of the committee would let it through.

Have you noticed the Fed apologists have largely dissapeared from FR threads?

Wonder if the people in Frank’s district would care about the auditing of the Federal Reserve? It seems like something pubs and dems could actually agree on since it’s not a partisan organization.

Just another example of the media’s gross negligence. If they were all reporting on this, there would be enough pressure on congress to bring it out of committee.

Picking nits, but the Bureau of Engraving and Printing is responsible for the printing of currency, not the Mint. An error like that detracts from the message of the article. Also, there was no discussion of the use of a discharge petition to force a vote on the bill. Can it be used? If it isn't possible, why not?

What this story neglects (and inquiring minds want to know why, as an audit might reveal something they do not want exposed) is WHY/HOW the Fascist Administration so opposed this full audit?

And what our (Vermont's) Commie Senator (Bernie) Sanders (he who hypocritically continues to claim he looks out for the "little guy") got in exchange for his intentionally watering down the bill?

Something about this stinks to high heaven and it isn't in Denmark, but on the shores of Gomorrah on the Potomac!

3/4 of Congresscritters CLAIM to support auditing the Fed. It’s not the law because many of those are liars playing to the general public when they make that claim and then doing what they want.

You think congress is more powerful than the fed??

Actually what the committee system does is give the rest of the members of the House the cover to say that they favor such an audit when they know they will never have to vote on it.
