Am I the only one who wonders why all these people are heavy? The woman with four children is eligible for food stamps, welfare etc. why can't they provide for their kids? I don't mean to be skeptical but something didn't sit right with me with this story....did anyone else feel that way?

“poverty” should be in quote marks.

America is maybe the only country ever where our “poor” people weigh four hundred pounds, and their twelve year old kids half that.

Oh yeah — and our poor folk text each other on their cutting edge cell phones. Whassup wif dat?

Maybe they should take a break from enlarging their family till they get back on their feet. I don't understand why Americans who are impoverished, are very often overweight. Aren't their restrictions on what they can buy with food stamps?

One of the stories was on a woman (young not even 20)who was living in her van with her 3 children, of course she wasn’t married and each child had a different father......somehow I can’t help but think that her decisions should not be the taxpayers responsibility.

You have to feel sorry for those suffering from unemployment, the inability to provide for one’s family, a seemingly never-ending search for a job, and the humbling visit to food shelves to survive, but I’d think the first thing one would do is to quite smoking $6.00 per pack cigarettes. That would buy some food for the kids.

Yeah, it ought to be “child support times three”.

I suppose we ought to be grateful she didn’t have ‘em vacuumed out of her busy womb before they were born!

States that have industries which supported Detroit have been brutally hit by what happened with GM. Closures of all the support businesses have hit hard. There was one story some months ago about a small town or county (don’t remember which) in Ohio where almost all of the city was out of work.

Appalachia is its own animal. Outsiders are not welcome. Haven’t been. Won’t be.

They cant buy booze. Other than that I think they can buy anything meant for humans to eat.

In England they are 29 stones and in Europe 180 kilos.

Saw a woman tonight at the grocery buying two large boxes of TGIFriday frozen potato skins with her Ohio card (like food stamps but looks like a credit card so people don’t get stigmatized). Anyway, the other products she bought at the same time (Coke, batteries, etc.) weren’t covered under the card so she whipped out a 100 dollar bill to pay. I told my friend that I wish I could buy TGIFriday snacks, but we can’t afford them!

Saw the show and braced myself for the inevitable “Obama comes to the rescue” ending. They didn’t go that route, because of course we know he doesn’t come to anyone’s rescue but himself and his communist cronies.

It was a very compelling show with real people suffering from lack of good jobs in our current economy. But why would someone have 3 kids in 3 years by 3 different men then wonder why she is having problems?? I also wondered how the people afforded cigarettes. And why were the some of the people saying they were going hungry yet were very overweight??

There is definitely an unemployment problem in Ohio. But I guess I just wonder why people exacerbate the problem by buying cigarettes and having too many kids they can’t support?

The “former honor student” with the 3 kids before 20 whose two career dreams before that were “paleontologist” and “singer” was pathetic on so many levels. It might have been nice to have a realistic career goal to fall back on in addition to not opening her legs so much.

Did you notice how Ann Curry wished so hard when she asked whether she ever had sex ed that the answer would be “no” but the girl said she had it? You could see what that question was setting up from a mile away. I guess she had the “how to” course rather than the pregnancy prevention series.

At least they weren’t picking on poor downtrodden southerners this time.

True story from around 1992.

I’m stone broke, working as a tradesman. Have a ghetto apartment and a paid for, barely operating vehicle.

Go to the grocery store with my weekly, perhaps $60 max grocery list. (This is before the net - I’d be much wiser with that food money now)

In front of me, mind you I’ve just busted ass for twelve hours, is an illegal alien, well dressed, with two shopping carts packed to the top with t-bones(I kid you not) and all manner of delicacies. He whips out his Food Stamp Card and strolls off to his late model SUV.

Yep, that was an early lesson for me.

The first thing you have to know about southern Ohio is that most counties down there have had an unemplyment rate of better than 15% for over 30 years since the mines and mills started to close. It is getting to the point where no one remembers anyone in ther family ever working. There really is nothing there except people.

This is why we need to tie welfare programs to mandatory Depo Provera shots. Take the shot, get the check, can’t get pregnant for three more months. No new children the mother can’t support until she’s off the dole. No need for abortions, either.
