NFL Championship Weekend
My big mouth blog ^ | 01/21/11 | Flood

Posted on 01/21/2011 9:19:09 AM PST by jpf

As the Patriots would say, these are T-shirt and hat games this weekend. Too bad for the Patriots they will be home watching it with you and me thanks to the Jets. The NFL Championship games are Sunday, the two winners get a trip to the Super Bowl in Dallas while the losers get to send unused T-shirts and hats to Haiti. Sure most of them are size XXX, they'll shrink in the wash. See, everybody wins, sort of.

We have the polls again in the sidebar, feel free to participate. Last week we were mostly right as a group, except no one, I mean not a soul, saw that Jets win coming. That's okay, neither did Tom Brady. He didn't seem to recognize a corner blitz either.

3 PM ET the Packers travel to the Bears on FOX. These teams have played each other a zillion times give or take, but this is the first playoff game between the two since the Bears beat the Pack the week after Pearl Harbor. I think the Packers passing game has improved since then so I'm going with the Pack.

Here's the problem, Vegas has the Pack as a 3½ point road favorite and that's got to be ticking the Bears off just a little. If they needed more motivation there it is, will it do for them what it did for the Jets or Seahawks earlier? Will it be good Jay at QB this weekend? I still think the Packers, but it could go either way.

There's a personal angle here too, Barack Obama is a Bears fan... I know, I'd hate to take that out on a whole geographical region. Plus my sister-in-law, who is the sweetest nicest person in the world, really good to my kids, and has to put up with my brother, is a Bears fan. Who do I root for now? That's a tough one, right? Sorry sis, hate is stronger than love in football.

At 6:30 PM ET the Jets take on the Steelers on CBS. The Steelers again? Really? Too bad they aren't a big market team or they might have 10 Super Bowls. Steelers are favored by 3½ points, which means Vegas thinks this is pretty even. The Steelers have always been my secondary rooting interest, meaning when the Eagles dropped out I always pulled for the Steelers. Then again you gotta love the way the Jets play football, winning all those road playoff games.

I might root for the Jets, but I think Steelers... how about in overtime?

Have a good weekend, enjoy the games.

Our Father
Who is Art Rooney
Hallowed be thy Game
Thy touchdowns come
Thy playoffs be won
On Earth as they are in Heinz Field
Give us this year Ring number seven
And forgive us our penalties
As we try to forgive those who root against us
And lead us not into lost yardage.
But deliver us from turnovers
A-Ben

My take is a bit different (at least in sports). Just because the Usurper is a Bears fan (presuming he even has a clue about football) doesn't cause me to hate the Bears. The Zero at 1600 may also like a good ribeye steak but I won't change my tastes due to that.

Now what does bother me is when a team's owner and top management (including the coach) express their support so blatantly for the Marxist. That's why I've come to despise the Steelers, in spite of them being my ex-hometown team.

Plus Troy and Heath are healthy and playing in this one.

Miller would never have dropped that last-second pass that Spaeth did the last time we played the Jets.

I must forgive the Stillers for that, along with the Rooneys and Coach Tomlin.

The Steelers trump ALL politics, PERIOD.

I BLEED Black and Yellow.

Aaron rodgers who art in lambeau
hallowed be they arm,
thy bowl will come, it will be won,
in Dallas as it was in lambeau.
Give us this Sunday,
our weekly win& forgive the less-passers
as you will not let them pass against us.
Lead us not into frustration,
but deliver us from the eagles.
For thine is the MVP,
the best of the NFC& glory of the cheeseheads,
now&forever.
GO GET EM!!!
Amen

The last time Jets won Super Bowl, the Beatles were thinking of breaking up

But this will only be their second post season meeting. Which almost defies logic. I mean I know for many years at least one of the two teams stunk, but I didn’t realize how consistent that trend was.

Sarah Palin was 5 years old or about to turn 5
Nixon was the President, the new President
Mary Jo Kopechne was still alive
Man had not yet landed on the moon
Beatles had just performed on the Apple rooftop

when the Jets won the SB last

I’m torn too. Wouldn’t mind seeing the Jets win after a 40-something year drought. However, my daughter is a Steelers’ fan and invited me to join her at a Steelers bar for the game. And to boot, we and the bar are in NYC.

Being in the same division since like always was a factor too, for many years you had to win the division to make the playoffs. For years after that the NFL’s post season format didn't favor divisional rematches...

still it's odd.
