Super Bowl XLV (that's 45, right?)
my big mouth blog ^ | 02/04/11 | flood

In case you haven't heard yet the Packers and Steelers play in the Super Bowl on Sunday. It's the first time these two have been matched up in a game with large Roman numerals. That just seems plain weird given how successful these franchises have been over the years. The Packers are a 3 point favorite, which is kind of a shock given how people are always saying how much more talented and balanced the AFC is compared to the NFC.

This is a tough one to call, so lets talk about my idea for Pro-Bowl reform instead. The Pro-Bowl stinks, we all know it, you'd be better off getting a bunch random coal miners to play the game and the results would be superior to the stink-fest the pros put on. Unfortunately, too many of you suckers watch on TV so the league won't put an end to it and the players just love a free trip to Hawaii in late January.

I have an idea, remember how during the Civil War rich guys could hire another guy to take their place in the Union Army for $300? It was called a bounty. We simply let players bounty their spot to, wait for it, a Cheerleader of their choice. The replacement players, the cheerleaders, would then play the game wearing the uniform of their bounty. For example, lets say DeSean Jackson selected Heather (Miss January in the Eagles Cheerleaders calender... excellent choice DeSean) to play for him in the game, Heather would then wear DeSean's jersey and play wide receiver in the game.

The players would still get to go to Hawaii to coach their replacements, the game would be more interesting, and probably have more contact. At least I hope there'd be more contact. Frankly I've seen Senior Bowling nights have more contact than the Pro Bowl.

Of course the NFL might not go for this idea, they'd probably be afraid that it would demean the game... as if. They'd also likely worry that it would hurt the wholesome image of the NFL as a family friendly source of televised violence. Anyway, a guy can dream can't he?

I think the Steelers by a field goal , but that's just a gut feeling based on the been there, done that theory. Then again that theory hasn't worked lately, just ask the Patriots and Colts. I think the key is going to be what it always is in the NFL, turnovers. Whoever doesn't turn the ball over is going to win. I think the Steelers defense will create a turnover at a crucial moment and that will be enough.

Hay, look, there's a poll over in the sidebar for you to pick the game.

The Green Bay Packers battled tested in 3 straight playoff games on the road, will win by 2 field goals.

Wait... they actually show the Pro Bowl and TV and people watch it? Seriously?

As for games that actually matter... I am, of course, rooting for the Steelers and picking them to win. But really, this game can go anywhere from blowout to the first-ever Super Bowl overtime. The teams are very evenly matched on paper (Pittsburgh slightly better on defense, Green Bay slightly better on offense), but they’re certainly capable of grinding it out in a low-scoring slugfest or shooting out the lights and setting combined offense records.

Should be a lot of fun, especially since I think either team is capable of coming back if they go down a couple of scores early.

Will it be legally streamed online?

I don’t get Fox and haven’t found a legal webcast anywhere.

I would suggest opting for the recent NHL plan where they let the players pick the teams, regardless of league. It might not make the game more competitive, but it would make it more interesting.

Doesn’t NFL.com have a way of watching on line? I’d try that.

The Pro Bowl should be a game of 7X7 flag football.

I know it’s not the same game - but neither is the current charade - and it would be a hoot.

Or make the defensive players play offense, and vice-versa.

I've heard that the "artist" to play during the half time is one scientifically chosen by the NFL to appeal to the audience demographic watching the game.
