Ok, so the SHHTF (S#!t Has Hit the Fan). You are hunkered down with your preps about you. There’s no ‘zombies’ knocking down you door, but the first few days are nerve-wracking to be sure. You will be busy securing what you can, monitoring the situation and generally getting into a survival routine to match whatever is going on. Generally, you will be too busy and with your adrenaline pumping and all the work to do it won’t seem that there are enough hours in the day to get everything done. But what happens when the initial action is over and now you are just biding time and waiting for things to get back to a more normal? What if it’s an extended period? How do you keep morale up, stave off depression, and keep hope alive? First, hopefully you are prepared for whatever the event is. Being prepared and being able to provide even just the basics will go far in reducing worry and panic. Full bellies (even if it isn’t exactly what you wanted), sated thirst, and a warm, dry place to sleep will at least give you something to build on.

Well done. Regarding number 5 I would add that many of the hand crank radios now come with a charging USB port for just that purpose. They take a while. I know because I’ve tested ours.

But they do work. And the cranking supports number 2, keeping busy. The games are a great idea, too. Every one of our emergency backpacks in our vehicles has a deck of cards in there. Something to pass the time can really help.

We’ve laid in a good supply of those baby wipes, too. When water is in short supply they do a fine job of washing off the worst of the stink. LOL

Since you won’t, I will point out the unspoken (technically, ‘unwritten’, I guess..) common sine qua non for all of your excellent points —

To wit - “company”... We’re ‘social animals’, and rely on others of our kind for our emotional and spiritual needs...

The ‘solitary strong man’ fantasy is a sure path to insanity or worse, IMO....

All of the hand cranked radios that I have seen use rechargeable batteries inside. I have decided to get an excellent quality battery charger, one that can run off of AC or 12 volts DC and that does a sophisticated job of charging the AA and AAA batteries. This gives me more versatility than a crank radio. Of course, you need a reliable way to charge a 12 volt DC battery.

Thats been my thinking as well I’ve been debating all the various chargers and there are many out there, but Ive been think of possibly getting a decent size solar panel 60 to 85 watt, a deep cycle battery and a inverter and mounting the whole thing on a two wheeler so I can easily move it around with the battery providing enough weigh to stabilize the whole thing in most wind conditions. Such a rig would give you some real usable power enough to even charge cordless power tools.

Down at the auto store they sell single wire alternators, with built in regs, that hook up directly to the battery terminal. I installed one as a replacement for a generator on my tractor.

Wonder how it would work with an old a/c fan attached to the shaft, then hoisted up on a pole?

The English/European royalty and banking families, enraged over the Falkands war, collapsed the Argentine Economy in the 90's. I recommend this book, a first hand account of a survivor, to help prepare for what the same scum have begun in America.

Some interesting notes....Police were no where to be found, except in wealthy communities and to make arrests for acts of vigilantism. Packs of dogs, which folks turned loose when they couldn't feed them, quickly went wild and were almost as big a problem as rampant crime.

Not the Freeplay. I have one. It uses a spring to operate a generator. It works like the motor on the old wind up phonographs.
