Blood Clots and The Pill (1 in 3 contracepting women develop vascular clots)
rushlimbaugh.com ^ | February 24, 2012 | Rush Limbaugh

RUSH: Lucy, Columbus, Ohio, Open Line Friday and it is your turn.

CALLER: Hello, Rush.

RUSH: Hi.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah, I don't have a lot of time, I realize that. I want to get right to my point. I'm a vascular specialist who sees a lot of blood clots in the lung, in the leg, sometimes in the arteries, but a lot in the veins, and probably one out of every three blood clots that I see in women is from the use of contraception.

RUSH: Wait just a minute. Wait just a minute. Are you telling me, did I just hear you right, you see a lot of blood clots, sometimes in the arteries, and one out of every three blood clots that you see in women is from the use of contraception?

CALLER: Correct.

RUSH: How do you possibly know that?

CALLER: How do I know that?

RUSH: Well, how do you know that it's the contraception in the one out of every three that led to the clot?

CALLER: Well, it is a known risk factor for blood clots, again, that no one's talking about. So if you go to any resource online about blood clots and risk factors for blood clots, I'll give you one resource, the Venous Disease Coalition.

originalRUSH: Would Planned Parenthood know anything about this?

CALLER: Well, they should.

RUSH: Yeah, but they'd probably cover it up.

CALLER: You know what, unfortunately no one really wants to talk about that.

RUSH: Okay, so you do. What's the point?

CALLER: Well, my point is that Obama and Kathleen Sebelius get up in front of an audience and say that this is for women's health. Well, unless they want to kill them with a pulmonary embolism I'm not sure how we're preventing -- what are we preventing --

RUSH: I don't know about your stat with contraception being responsible for one-third of all blood clots out there, but I do find it reprehensible that these people continue to portray pregnancy as the great sickness and abortion as the great cure. I haven't heard of anything sicker.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: We looked it up during the break. It's pretty much true. One of the largest studies ever to look at the link between blood clots and hormonal contraception is found that women who take newer birth control pills appear to get dangerous blood clots in their veins about twice as often as women on older pill formulations. That was the finding of one of the largest studies ever to look at the link between blood clots and hormonal contraception. And it says here, this is WebMD, blood clots are a well-known side effect of birth control pills. I did not know that. Exactly right. What are we doing to our women? And we're supposed to be the ones that don't like women?

There are a multitude of web sites that discuss this issue. From Everyday Health Web site:

Oral contraception, or the pill, is a popular form of birth control and is also used to treat a number of conditions, such as irregular menstruation and hormone imbalances or acne. But, like all drugs, the birth control pill is not without risks. Certain types of hormonal birth control may increase a woman's risk of developing a condition called deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a dangerous type of blood clot that usually forms in the legs. The most serious possible complication of DVT is the possibility that a clot can travel to a lung, resulting in a pulmonary embolism — a blockage of an artery in the lung — which can cause death.

Blood Clot Risk Factors

While just about anyone has the potential to develop DVT, some people are at higher risk than others. Women have an added risk if they’re pregnant or if they take certain types of birth control or hormone replacement therapy (HRT), particularly if they have any of the following risk factors:

Douglas Schuerer, MD, director of trauma at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and assistant professor of surgery at Washington University in St. Louis, Ill., says these risk factors “make the patient's blood ‘hypercoagulable,’ or easy to clot.”

Blood Clots and Birth Control Pills

Although some newer birth control pills contain only a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone, called progestin, most birth control pills contain both estrogen and progestin. These hormones affect a woman’s ovulation cycle (release of the egg from the ovary) and the lining of the uterus, when taken to prevent pregnancy. When used as hormone replacement therapy, they balance out a woman’s natural hormone levels.

The estrogen found in hormonal contraception is what is thought to increase the risk of blood clots — not by forming the clots themselves, but by making the blood more likely to clot. Any type of hormone therapy that contains estrogen, including oral contraceptives, HRT, or hormone patches, carries a risk for hypercoagulability.

Without a doubt, the birth control pill is a convenient and effective way to prevent pregnancy or to replace lost hormones, but how are you to know if the pill is safe for you?

While all medications have risks, it’s often possible to reduce risk factors by taking certain steps. Before starting hormone pills, discuss your individual level of risk for DVT with your doctor. You may be at increased risk if you:

Blood Clot Warning Signs

If you do take birth control pills, the best way to protect yourself from blood clots, other than reducing the risk factors you have control over, is to know the signs and symptoms of DVT. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your doctor immediately:

By asking questions and discussing your risks with your doctor before starting hormone therapy or birth control pills, together you can decide what's right for you and feel good about your decision.

It’s not only blood clots:

“The Birth Control Pill and Breast Cancer Risk” (maybe)
http://www.webmd.com/breast-cancer/guide/pill-breast-cancer-risk

“One strong risk factor for stroke is atrial fibrillation, an abnormal heart rhythm that boosts women’s risk of stroke by fourfold to fivefold. To prevent stroke, women should make sure they have consulted with their doctor and are taking the right medications to control atrial fibrillation, according to the guidelines.”
http://www.businessweek.com/lifestyle/content/healthday/649920.html

I know someone who experienced atrial fibrulation while in college as a direct result of taking the pill. It turned out the same physician who prescribed them was also the one seen when the young woman and her husband went to the student health clinic. That doctor looked at the chart and family history indicated and asked what idiot prescribed them.....True story.

Title: Blood Clots and The Pill (1 in 3 contracepting women develop vascular clots)

From the article: probably one out of every three blood clots that I see in women is from the use of contraception.

He didn't say 1 in 3 women on the pill develop clots. He said of every three women he sees with clots take the pill. Not exactly the same thing is it?
(And as I've said before, I don't write prescriptions for OCs)

That is precisely what the caller said!

The Federal Government wants us to pay for these pills under the guise of women's health. They then turn around and insist the Catholic Church, which rejects artificial contraception (precisely because they care about women) to cover these pills with their health insurance.

I am an RN. I had a patient who was 20 years old and was a paraplegic, with her mom taking care of her, she became a paraplegic due to the pill.

She was not married. She had been a para since 17, question is why are these girls out there having sex not only early but so all the time?

Answer: It is considered okay, as long as you have these contraception devices ie, the pill, abortion, iud, etc.

According to the Democrats these things are all benign and available. Planned Parenthood doesn’t even want the parents involved.

Forgot to mention, it was the pill that caused her to have a blood clot, which caused a stroke that led to her paraplegia.

One of the things few people talk about is that the standard birth control pill is an abortifant of a potentially conceived egg. The standard birth control pill causes the wall of the uterus to not be receptive to a fertilized egg attachment. It doesn’t prevent conception, which is what most pro-life people describe as the start of life.

The only difference from the morning after pill, is the fertilized egg never has a chance to lodge in the uterine wall. Ron Paul was partially correct in his assessment during the last debate.

A condom or sponge usually prevents conception, which puts it in a different category. I imagine most people don’t want to discuss this because the women in their lives have chosen to use the birth control pill.

Actually, the Catholic Catholic Church has been saying this for more than 40 years but ... who's listening? Now they are demonized for standing up for genuine women's health.

I agree. Praise God for our Catholic brothers and sisters who follow Christ. Catholics also were used by God to preserve the scriptures (ancient manuscripts preserved by monks through tough times in history) for all of us!

Taking hormonal contraception is insanely idiotic. It is messing with the body’s hormonal balance and something one ought not to do.

Your title is very bad.

The doc is claiming that in those women who do have blood clots, 1/3 of them are on hormones — not that 1/3 of women on oral contraceptives have clots.

Imagine - 1/2 to 70% of women have been on OCP’s at one time or another, more than 1/3 of post menopausal women take estrogen at some point. Just think how many women would be on warfarin, if 1/3 of them developed intravascular clots!

The highest number I’ve seen is less than 10 in 10,000.

Comprehensive sex education is evolving into sexual activists pushing adult porn sex (not limited to reproductive sex) on children at younger and younger ages. Perverts don’t much want parents to know what they are doing with the kiddos as they sexually groom them in their image and likeness.

It is liberals’ effort to overcome parental rights so they can do as they want with other people’s children. It’s very authoritative and aggressively anti-parent when parents try to object. Remember Hillary’s UN “sexual rights of a child” effort?

I just want say I sure respect you for not writing prescriptions for OC's.

Even many years ago, before I was a practicing Catholic and was just a hippie girl gardener, I used to say I'd never put anything in my body that I wouldn't put in my compost pile.

And so now, a couple million cycles of endocrine disruptors are flushed into the waste-water systems monthly via hormonal contraceptive-using women’s excreta. And I see that the male fish and amphibians in the Watauga Watershed (we drink from the Watauga watershed) are developing eggs in their testicles. I wonder if there is any reason to believe this won’t affect other vertebrates?

I have young male vertebrates in my family. Yolk proteins in their seminal vesicles and increasingly feminized hormonal profiles --- if that's what's happening --- yeah, that would be a concern for me and for them.

I don't want to be an overreacter. I wouldn't want to draw disturbing conclusions on scant evidence, on no evidence. or against evidence. But--- would you know anything about this?

Thank you for your evident, conscientious, ethical commitment.

In my career, both as a critical care nurse then later as a nurse anesthetist, I have seen firsthand many patients that have had blood clots (strokes, pulmonary embolisms, DVTs, etc) from OCPs.

This is true, and it isn’t talked about by the medical community nor the mainstream media.

I’ve said before & I’ll say it again - CONTRACEPTION IS A LIE
