In Chicago it’s only wrong if you get caught; even in the Little League

For the third time in International Little League history a team has been caught cheating and had its wins and title taken away. The latest story comes from Chicago and it involves an all-Black team.

The governing body of international Little League has vacated Chicago’s Jackie Robinson West Little League (JRW) team title as champion of America. According to a spokesman for Little League International (LLI), its investigation into the eligibility of JRW players determined that not only had ineligible players been allowed onto the team, their status was known to team officials.

The ineligibility of the players stems from their living outside of the geographic boundary lines assigned to the team. Investigators also discovered that the boundaries map submitted with the JRW application to play in the Little League World Series tournament, was deliberately falsified to hide team violations. A spokesman said, “Little League International found that Jackie Robinson West Little League used a falsified boundary map for their 2014 tournament.”

Venisa Green, a JRW parent, said she wondered if the team’s title would have been questioned if the kids weren’t African American. Green asked, “Would they rather the boys be killed in the Chicago streets...

The Po Po should storm the kids’ homes and confiscate all the trophies.

Teach ‘em young. Sadly, the kids may not have known (but some probably got it) the extent of the fraud. But the coaches sure did. What a great teachable moment for the kids huh? Sue away jessie.

It would have been helpful if the blogger did a bit of research instead of just quoting a news article and adding his opinion.

The parent wonders if this would have happened if the team was white. Apparently there have been two other times teams were caught cheating. What happend in those cases? Is eligibility something the league always takes seriously? Or do teams always stretch the rules on eligibility but usually no one complains? Probably the former but how would we know without more info, and how would the parent know either.

Instead of just taking our corners and arguing, more facts would help.

Notice Jackson didn’t get traction on this one. Could it be that people are contracting JWFS (Jackson Whining Fatigue Syndrome)and just don’t care anymore about what him and Sharpton says?

It’s actually only “wrong” when you point out that a minority group didn’t abide by the rules.

I’m only surprised that Obama didn’t weigh in yet on this event.

Did the team use ineligible players throughout the season, or just pull together an all-star team for the tournament?

I believe this is what's called an artificial dichotomy, presenting the situation as if there are only two solutions. In this case, the boys should either be allowed to cheat or they will be killed in the streets. What lousy logic.

Seems to me that the upshot of the “Little League Team Busted” story is not that it is wrong if you get caught, but that it is wrong to catch someone and point it out. There’s a lot of this these days. Bryan Williams story...New England Patriots story...

You cheated. You got caught. You got punished.

So, now what do you do to make it right for future players coming out of that league? Were the coaches fired? They should be grateful that the team wasn’t suspended from future tournaments.

I would have given them the death penalty and not allowed the LL to ever go to Williamsport again.

I know Ms. Green really doesn't want to know the answer, but here it is ( from Wikipedia):
The 1992 Little League World Series took place between August 24 and August 29 in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

The Little League baseball team representing Zamboanga City won its way through national trials, the Far East series, and after brushing aside the competition at the Little League World Series, was crowned the champion of the 46th Little League World Series. The team was stripped of its title after Filipino journalists revealed to the world that the team had used ineligible players who, variously, did not meet either age or residency requirements. The team from Long Beach, California, which Zamboanga City had defeated in the final, had the title awarded to it. In their 29-0 blowout of Canada the team from the Dominican Republic set the record for the most runs scored in one game.

This is the epitome of the entitlement mentality. These people believe they are entitled to whatever they want and if they can’t have it then it’s because of oppression. Thus, anything is “right” as long as you don’t get caught and if you do get caught it’s someone else’s fault.

This is a teachable moment.

fudging the rules (at least a little bit, but sometimes by a lot) is seen in urban poor areas as the only way to claw out of the generational cycle of poverty. This doesn’t just go for criminals, parents will claim their kid lives a few dozen blocks away with a cousin to get their kid eligible for enrollment in a better school. The system they are born into is so screwed up and so disinterested in being anything more than screwed up, that the only way out, or to get just a little bit more of a chance inlife, is to hustle.

Given that precondition, geographic lines for a little league team are very flexible and questioning the veracity of them is attacking families who just want their kids to have something positive in their lives to build on.

How one gets from that starting point to understanding that the system can be comparatively fair and one can get ahead by playing by the rules, and put in the massive effort to root out the corruption and mismanagement that keep these populations down, I haven’t the foggiest... but school choice would be a good first step.

I’ve coached LL for some years and have always found their enforement of rules to be to the letter.

I will answer the question the parent asked, no it wouldn’t happen too a white team. Why, because in a white district no LL coach could have got away with this scam. In order to include ringers on a LL team, one must exclude players from the district first. In a white district, the excluded players parents would have sued the team and coach before they could play their first game. You could only get away with this in a district where the parents are disconnected from their kids lives, like the one in question.

That's a very helpful fact. It would have been helpful if the original blogger had called a few people in LL to figure out if they are generally sticklers for the rules, in which case there is a specific answer to the parent's suggestion about racism.
