trying to identify (photographer's?) weighted clamp on canopy (tent) pole
self | 6/14/15 | NewJerseyJoe

Posted on 06/14/2015 6:32:07 PM PDT by NewJerseyJoe

Does anyone recognize this? It's a weighted clamp, used by a vendor at the farmers market to hold down his tent from blowing away. He said he got it from a photographers' supply -- that it's something photographers use to keep their equipment steady in outdoor shooting conditions. I'm trying to buy something like this, but I can't look for it until I know what it's called. Thanks....

A C-clamp and a 5 pound weight would work just as well (and probably be cheaper)

There is a yellow sticker on it.

It probably has the manufacturers name on it.

A bag of sand and a tyrap would suffice........

I don’t know what particular weight that is, but search the following terms:

TENT POLE WEIGHTS
CAST IRON TENT POLE WEIGHTS

I come up with various designs of sand filled bags, cast iron, and other materials for such weights.

I’ve seen something like that on a surveyor’s field tripod.

Thanks to one of your links, I was able to identify it. It’s a Manfrotto Counter Balance Weight. Thank you all!

I have experience doing outdoor craft shows and I use my own weights. The weights from manfrotto seem a bit light,up to 10 pounds I believe, and may not stand up to a good wind. You can buy weights at The Hutshop or you can make your own: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymTazgG46v4. You may want to go at least 20 pounds, or more, each if you make your own. I’m not sure how much mine weigh, but they are very heavy. Even though they are heavy i have had the wind lift them off the ground.

I use a 5-gallon water can, filled with water.

Hah. 10 lbs? With the winds we get here in the Albuquerque metro area, all those would do is become missiles when the canopy took off.
