Local 412 of the United Auto Workers has placed a spotlight on employees who have chosen to exercise their right to not support the union financially under Michiganâs right-to-work law. In a recent newsletter, the local urges co-workers not to share âtools, knowledge or supportâ with individuals who chose not to pay union dues.
It then lists the names of the employees to be shunned.
âI hope there is one thing we can all take from this,â the newsletter reads. âPlease do not share any tools, knowledge or support for any of these employees who choose not to pay their fair share.â
Jeff Hagler, president of the UAW Local 412 Region 1, and Michael Hayes, vice president of the union, did not respond to an email seeking comment.
In response to the right-to-work law, unions in many workplaces have resorted to publicly posting the names of employees who choose not to become members. Local 412 appears to be the first to urge employees in a unionized workplace to shun their fellow workers who have opted out.
The union local has actually gone one step further. In the same newsletter, it states that if individuals who choose not to belong to the union change their minds later, they will have to pay all union dues levied during the time they have been employed without paying, as an âinitiation fee.â Moreover, they would only be allowed to make this election in the month of March or August.
âIs the UAW really advising its members to not give advice or share tools with a co-worker that could prevent an accident or make a job less dangerous?â asked F. Vincent Vernuccio, the director of labor policy at the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. âIf the UAW is willing to sacrifice safety for their own profit then workers may need to do more than just opt out, they may need a new union.â
Nothing but things.
Just because they act like fascists doesn’t give you the right to call them fascists!
Who is likely to know more, have more money to buy tools, etc.?
Liberals are spoiled children.
If the unions are so important and helpful to folks, they'll join up.
If they make it a choice, unions will become defunct.
So then if the workers choose to exercise their right not to join the Union then anything the Union negotiates as part of their contract - salaries, profit sharing, etc. - doesn’t have to be paid to the non-member workers, right?
Unions = goons.
AFLCIO does the same. The ,on they news letter ends every time with a list of non members.
You work for me and plan to shun fellow workers? You’re fired. I don’t give a flip about your union if it doesn’t give a flip about my business.
If I were the judge, I would dissolve the union and seize the assets.
I have been on the business end of this type of shunning (it was a summer job for college money). It can be tough eating alone - even for a summer. They ended up shutting down the entire line by sending everything to me totally screwed up. Management said I could hold out (this was a right to work state) - but I knew they wanted this resolved fast. The next step was going to be tires and windshields.
Tough bunch to work with.
Unions are nothing but protection rackets of the same sort run by Capoine, Nitti, Luciano, etc, etc, etc. Btw, so is most government these days.
Sue them. This certainly sounds actionable, and there’s no shortage of greedy lawyers.
If you’re planning on buying a UAW-built car, I’d advise you to pay for the extended warranty ...
And the company can compare productivity of the two groups. Which group do you think will have more malcontents, unproductive workers, habitual drunks and drug users.
Tough question, eh?
The union leadership needs to be doxed with the message “these people have been living large at your expense”, followed by their salaries and perks.
Next up: The UAW being sanctioned for restraint of trade in violation of the NLRA.
