Here is a pic of the Vostok ice core, showing temps for the last 800,000 years or so. Note in the pic we are at the far left - at the very height of temperature ranges.

Note also that for at least 80% of the time, the temperatures were far, far colder than they are today - meaning we are getting ready for a switch!

This is the meaning of why we are living in an "interglacial" period.
