So I was watching a movie with my kids (10 and 13) the other day and was thinking about how different the media is that they consume than from the stuff I was raised on.
I would like to get them interested in older movies with positive messages. Which John Wayne and which WWII movies are your favorites and which would think would grab kids' attention?
I'm thinking "The Cowboys" would be good, but what else would everyone suggest?

My favorite John Wayne movie is Rio Bravo.

Suggestion: start with Stagecoach, then go through the series of westerns he made with John Ford eg, she wore a yellow ribbon.
Also, “Back to Bataan”, with Wayne and Anthony Quinn — about the guerrilla fighting in the Philippines, life under the Japanese occupation, etc. (Again, all — more loosely this time — based on fact.)

And every kid that age should see, “The Alamo.”

Wayne is an American icon. You could almost pic any of his films.
Western - Big Jake or The Cowboys
War - Sands of Iwo Jima or In Harms Way
You don't even have old Star Trek on syndication like it used to be (ran nightly for 30 years where I was).
Maybe people git used to them finally. Also, I read modern audiences find the old shows too backwards in terms of technology - black and white is a killer to sell. We advanced so far even old Star Trek looks dated special effects wise.
With that said the early Wayne westerns he did before he became a big star are kind of simple morality tales that kids can easily grasp. They are in the public domain so you can own dozens cheap in DVD or find them here: http://publicdomainmovies.org/john-wayne-classics/

A GREAT film about 'boys becoming men' under Wayne's guidance. The true ending is not shown anymore and replaced with a more 'politically correct' ending, but still a good movie.
