You can look at the map of 2004, for starters. It was clear after the results that values voters made the difference. Besides more social conservatives being motivated to vote, there's not going to be excitement for HRC among the black voting population.
Trump or Cruz are willing to run an aggressive campaign, the kind we hadn't seen since Bush the Elder in '88. If Bush the Elder can motivate the conservative base, and he did despite himself, Cruz should be able to as well. Trump is a diferent animal, and can certainly win, and by a large margin. March polls mean nothing for the general election.
