To the long list of degradations the people of Venezuela have to suffer because of their awful socialist government, you can now add dumpster diving. The Associated Press reports that people desperate for food have now turned to rooting through the garbage for meals:
Until recently, Julio Noguera worked at a bakery. Now he spends his evenings searching through the garbage for food.
I come here looking for food because if I didnt, Id starve to death, Noguera said as he sorted through a pile of moldy potatoes. With things like they are, no one helps anyone and no one gives away meals.
Across town, unemployed people converge every dusk at a trash heap on a downtown Caracas sidewalk to pick through rotten fruit and vegetables tossed out by nearby shops. They are frequently joined by small business owners, college students and pensioners people who consider themselves middle class even though their living standards have long ago been pulverized by triple-digit inflation, food shortages and a collapsing currency.
The socialist revolution started by Hugo Chavez was explicitly designed to spread the wealth around and lift the countrys poor out of poverty. For a while it did, which thrilled socialists around the world as a visible sign of success. But now, with a few more years of corruption, central economic planning and a downturn in oil prices, Venezuelans are desperate and hungry.
Venezuelas poverty had eased during the administration of the late President Hugo Chavez. But a study by three leading Caracas universities found that 76 percent of Venezuelans are now under the poverty line, compared with 52 percent in 2014
Nearly half of Venezuelans say they can no longer afford to eat three meals a day, according to a recent poll by the local firm Venebarometro. The poll surveyed 1,200 adults at their homes the first week in April and had a margin of error of plus or minus of about 2 percentage points.
Venezuelans have been trying to remove the socialist government. Last December, voters gave the opposition control of the National Assembly but that body has limited power in a country largely run by the dictates of socialist president Nicolas Maduro. The opposition has started a recall referendum to remove Maduro from office but the government has been slow-walking the process. The goal seems to be to delay Maduros removal until next year when, under Venezuelan law, Maduros socialist vice president would serve out the remainder of his term.
I had an ex-neighbor who did that to survive years ago. Could barely pay rent, and I didn;t judge him when I sorta caught him before dawn doing it. Now he’s one of the cast in a soap opera on a certain alphabet. It was unusual because he’s a good looking dude and if he weren’t he wouldn;t be on that show. I even joked he should be a gigolo to old ladies but he didn’t go that route.
I wonder how long it will be before cannibalism takes hold there?
Ahhh, socialism at its finest.
Starving actors, at least he wasn’t robbing parking meters like Johnny Depp did.
Why are the shops tossing out food if their is a food shortage? Is their price too high? (Gov’t forced pricing?)
I was thinking about Venezuela earlier, Mayb President Trump could Appoint Bernie Sanders as Economic Ambassador to Venezuela so he can show them the proper way to implement Socialism.
The Difference between Socialism and Communism is the difference between Seduction and Rape.
In the End you still got SCREWED!
BTDT. One does what has to
I heard things are so bad they have resorted to eating muffin stumps.
Horrific. 1/2 our population is dumb enough to believe the lies a good portion of theirs did.
America’s future - thanks to Obama and continued, if allowed, under Hillary Clinton.
If food is scarce, it will be slim-pickings in the dumpsters as well.
The corrupt send bad stuff to the shops to distribute, and they throw out what even the desperate paying customers won’t eat.
Socialism says you have to take what they give you as well as the prices they set. For example, FDR’s era saw a case go to the Supreme Court where the federal rules said you had to accept all chickens in a lot - including the sick birds.
You can bet your last bolivar that the political class and their guard dogs are eating well.
It was a good thing I was nice to him and it paid off because when I head to that certain network, he buys me lunch and..he introduces me to pretty ladies. ;)
IMO, the potential in Venezuela is unlimited. It is a country of many many resources, plus open land for ranches and farms and isn’t that populated.
I think they really could have a lot of potential if they had someone who knew how to built big and get things done.
I’d like to see Trump as President of Venezuela, I think he could really turn things around there, but here in America, not so much.
IMO, Trump needs to go back to the Reagan amnesty law passed that approved a wall that has never been funded.
Trump needs to do as Reagan and bypass Congress and go straight to the American people and they will agree whole heartedly. Congress will have no way to dance around it.
Plus, he needs to make a forceful statement that, “WE ARE A NATION OF LAWS.” and now we will follow the laws we have on immigration.
We will also follow our gun laws where a crime committed with a gun is 5 years plus.
Sorry folks, I’m not really enthusiastic about voting for Trump and my hope for these few things but I do know if the beast is elected they will never happen
Where are these people getting the food that they are throwing out? There must come a time when nobody has anything to throw out.
My wife and were thinking about giving our Baylor shirts and caps away. She said “That would be like giving away muffin stumps.”
McDumpster’s Self-Serve All-You-Can-Eat (or all you can find) Seasoned Vittles.
But Bernie and Hillary will do collectivism better.
Hey, look at upside! At least “Democratic Socialist” Venezuela doesn’t have any more stray or shelter animals.
