I had a run-in (on a music forum of all places) with one of these self-righteous ‘I work with the homeless’ types who had a million excuses for them and no cure. He was in Portland.
He readily, even eagerly, admitted that every street, alley and block around his downtown office building smelled like an open sewer (which, in fact, it was, thanks to his ‘help’).
He couldn’t seem to figure out why, after shelters handed out 3 square meals a day, that the numbers of homeless were increasing and why they were setting up quasi-permanent camps (since the city officials refused to do a thing in a destructive exercise in virtue signaling).

Starting in the 70's the left began shutting down psychiatric hospitals in this country having determined that psychos had the right to die in the streets rather than be "imprisoned" in a clean,safe hospital.
