For the last 8 years, Democrats have taken great satisfaction in referring to the GOP as a “small, regional, party.” Despite big mid-term wins, Dems believed they’d crushed their opponents once and for all. Obama was popular, people were just going to love ObamaCare, and the country was moving left on social issues. Then Donald Trump happened.
Now, Democrats have a historically low number of office holders. As Ohio Representative Tim Ryan says in the clip below, Dems are “at the smallest number of Democratic members of our caucus since 1929,” and currently boast “the smallest number of democratic office holders in the state and federal level since just after the civil war.”

Obama happened first, then Trump happened. Obama was personally popular, but also gutted the democrat party before Trump came along.

The Democrat Party needs to rebrand themselves as the “Socialist Democrat Party USA”. Drop the name “Progressive”, since everyone can see through the charade. The Bernie Sanders Branch would revel in this, and the remaining branches really identify with Socialist goals.
The “Masks of Communism” are starting to slip, and they feel safe to show their real face to the American people. So why not go all the way, and rename themselves.

I do see some danger here: an energized base of Democrats could achieve historic gains in the House in 2018. But, I think they will have trouble holding on to their current position in the Senate, with so many Democrats up for re-election in red states.
If Trump sticks to his economic and immigration agenda, it will mute a lot of the opposition -- as long as the economy doesn't tank in the next two years. A couple of years of solid growth in the GDP will do wonders.
If Trump voters don't get complacent and make the effort to vote in 2018, it will hold the Democrats gain to a minimum. What will be interesting: if the leftist media goes "full retard" against Trump, will it energize conservatives to react as they did in 2016?

I think George Bush really screwed up in Iraq and that had a lot to do with the crushing defeats we suffered in 2006 and 2008. You can blame a lot of the 2008 results on the economy as well but our spanking really started in 2006 and that was all Iraq.
They are a party confined within the city limits of large cities. New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago trying to rule over the rest of the country.
