Full title: Mayor of Oakland warns against ‘scapegoating’ lavishly paid city employees who failed to inspect deathtrap warehouse in 30 years.

The Ghost Ship warehouse/artists’ colony fire makes for a compelling drama. And everyone knows that for a drama, you need villains, especially when a tragedy is as vivid as the horrible deaths of 36 mostly young adult creative explorers.

The mainstream media found a ready made figure in Derick Almena, the man who rented the warehouse and set up the colony, whose solipsistic tweets focused on his own suffering not the fire victims.

His appearance on the Today Show could be a textbook example for PR consultants to use in warning their clients who have just experienced a disaster.

Seems that 36 people died because of the bureacratic mess in Oakland and the corruption that goes with it.

So Mayor, who should be held responsible and how should they be punished. Involuntary Manslaughter?

That’s a good point. Please, no scapegoats. Hold to account the whole bloomin’ corrupt city including that mayor!

Anyhow, the question I would ask of these lefties is... what do you intend to do to FIX the problem.

Lefties say they care. Fine, I take that at face value, and hold them responsible for following through. Are you going to care about safety measures, that we have no excuse for not knowing, going all to a kind of literal hell?

Somewhere between being overbearing nannies and ignoring everything, has to be an optimum.

"I'm warning you people - do not expect us to do the job you pay us to do...or else!".

The battle cry of government bureaucrats everywhere.

Yep...For a building of that type to not have been inspected by the Fire Prevention Bureau Inspectors or the first in engine company crew in 30 years is truly unbelievable and criminal.

It’s not bad enough that landing a job with the City of Oakland is essentially winning the public employment lottery. For the kind of money Oakland pays, you’d think they’d get people who can (or even will) actually perform the jobs they’re being paid to do. But that’s probably too much to ask, I guess.

In my California city, the Fire Dept. conducts inspections every one or two years, in connection to Certificates of Occupancy, etc.

Responsible property owners simply comply, giving the FD access when requested.

The FD is looking for obvious dangerous conditions, proper signage for exits, the number and type of exits, etc.

Building codes require two (or more) stairways if a building exceeds certain sq. footage thresholds, etc.

Smoke detectors, fire alarms, sprinklers, etc. are inspected.

Insurance companies require evidence of compliance. Mortgage holders require insurance for their collateral.

The owner failed, the tenant failed, the city officials failed to conform to standard, good safety practices.

It is claimed to be very difficult to succeed in liability and negligence lawsuits against government entities.

With 36 dead, I predict some lawyers will test that very seriously.

Most of all, the building owner.

It IS a tragedy these people died, but we don’t get to discount the fact the property owner is sad about losing his property.....His post may be bad form, but no one gets to assume he isn’t mourning the loss of life as well.....People make me yearn for the Zombie Apocalypse.

What is wrong with everyone? Listen, We pay our City Workers and Inspectors a Lot of Money to go out and inspect these businesses, their main function is to write citations for Building Code Violations and Fire Code Violations, all of which Brings in Big Money annually to the City via Civil Fines.

Why in the hell would we ever waste our time inspecting a building full of Losers,Hippies, and Drug Addicts that have NO MONEY to pay these fines??

It just isn’t cost effective to waste valuable resources on scofflaws with NO MONEY.

This is becoming the 2016 version of the Jim Jones massacre. Jim Jones was a guy that was a Bay area cult leader allowed to do shady things because he could reliably deliver democrat votes. These artists, and the building owner were allowed to do shady things because they were democrats.

The NFPA and Uniform Fire and Building codes are recognized nation wide and to my knowledge have been strictly enforced in CA for many years, at least by non corrupt city and county fire departments.

There’s much blame for everyone involved in this and no doubt there’ll be lawsuits, criminal charges are warranted in my view but probably won’t happen.

In a case like this, where the city isn’t poor, maybe the fines could be skipped or reduced, just CLEAN UP SUCH PLACES (where possible). Put charity organizations or churches on such cases to see what good can be done. At the worst the occupants can be evicted.

Sounds like that affair wouldn’t be viable anyhow, if electricity had to be stolen.

You're dead on. I don't expect the progs who run the city will come to that conclusion.

this is why the owner isn’t in jail yet....the city has part of the blame. Not surprised. It is Oakland...cali. Corrupt to the core.

I’m sure the taxpayers of Oakland enjoy being “warned” by the hired help.
