College Advice

Posted on 12/29/2016 9:02:04 PM PST by Tai_Chung

My daughter is a senior in high school.
She wants to major in Computer Science and minor in French
She has mostly looked at small (<5,000 students) liberal arts schools.

Can anyone recommend some conservative schools?

ACT = 26
3.26 regular GPA
3.64 weighted GPA
She is also interested in playing the cello in the orchestra.

Why would you go to a liberal arts school for a comp sci/math major?

Wow, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign meets all of that, except being conservative.

Bummer.

Go to a big school for computer science.

Talk her out of French.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I don’t think it is possible for a public university to be conservative.

Does your child have geographical preferences?
Any ideas on how far willing to travel?
I drew a 300-mile circle around my home as a search guide decades ago.

Follow the Dennis Prager Route:

Do not send your kid to college the first year after high school.

Have them get a job, and learn how the real world works. If they insist on going to college, do NOT pay for it.

Afterwards, they can go to college, more mature and more knowledgable of the real world than their peers. And more importantly, they will hopefully be more immune to the liberal indoctrination bullshit thrown at them.

HILLSDALE COLLEGE.

Also, any reputable computer school would do for computers, be just as good, and cost less. Afterwards, they can go to grad school for more advanced stuff, or intern somewhere and actually learn something hands on

Colorado School of Mines, Golden Colorado. Small but very well regarded in science, technology and engineering. Low key and conservative.

I have a few daughters in college currently. One attending Gettysburg College which is a small liberal arts school and fairly conservative on the spectrum of colleges. The key is to find a good fit. Best of luck.

A small liberal arts school won’t have a computer science program worth paying for. Do searches in-state or out-of-state for rankings for computer science programs. You don’t have to pick the best, just a good one and it does not have to be the most expensive. For the French minor, she won’t find a job there and could take less expensive classes at a junior college if it is really an interest.

I am a senior electrical engineer at a fortune 500 company and I recruit and interview technical college graduates. A team interviews candidates, but I see them and know what companies are looking for.

I like in Kansas City.
Most of the schools she has looked at are out of state.
Lake Forest College
University of Illinois in Chicago
Monmouth College
Drury University

There were some New York schools that I have already rejected.
I am scared of crime and liberalism in Chicago
Lake Forest seems safe even though it is near Chicago, but it seems like a very wealthy area.

Concur on the French. I have a friend who lives in Paris, works for top-drawer finance companies as a manager and consultant in IT and cybersecurity, and who speaks four languages, including obviously French. He says many days the only time he speaks French is when he orders lunch. English is the language of business and technology. Study French for fun maybe, but if she wants a language that would be a marketable skill, learn Chinese.

As a Jayhawk, I think it would not hurt to visit that campus although it is not the size described but it does have a broad range of what you have mentioned. I would look at some of the small Iowa liberal arts colleges. My oldest son went to Coe. None of those schools are conservative but they aren’t leftist hotbeds either.

Try to find value, if you can do the community/junior college route then finish the last two years at a four year institution, I would recommend that . Try to avoid as much debt as you can.

College costs have been out of control for a while, there is the beginnings of a correction.

While the cost of college education in the US has reached record highs, Germany has abandoned tuition fees altogether for German and international students alike. An increasing number of Americans are taking advantage and saving tens of thousands of dollars to get their degrees.
