Pedestrian deaths saw a significant spike in 2016, reaching a staggering total of 5,997, the highest total ever recorded since the U.S. began tracking the measure more than two decades ago.

The reason? People are distracted more than ever by texting and using their smartphones.

According to preliminary state data gathered for the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), pedestrian fatalities surged 11 percent from 2015 to 2016, continuing an upward trend.

Pedestrian fatalities surged 10 percent from 2014 to 2015.

This sounds important. I’ll read it as soon as i’m done crossing the street while reading my text messages.

Cell phones: 10 times more likely to accidentally kill you than guns.

Cell phone or no cell phone, if you’re crossing the road/highway or street, do not assume the approaching drivers will see you and stop. You can be in the right, but dead right. Pay attention or die. Going under the wheels is not a good way to go.

in the 80’s it was walkmans, in the 90’s Walkman cd players, in 00s cellphones, now it smart phones.

In all these cases people were getting hit by trains SUV’s and trucks.

I still remember one dufus that was walked into a truck bounced off then got run over by the same truck, while texting

Almost got an IPhone Asshole tonight. I was making a signaled left hand turn into a small side street after waiting for oppose direction cars to pass, when some IPhone idiot walked right out into the street in front of my car (which was already in the turning position.

He yelled at me and I yelled back, “Get off the damned phone you fool”.

He never looked at traffic when he started to cross the street (I was already halfway into the sidestreet).

This is an increasing situation among millenials and some older folk. At one corner I counted 6 out of 7 people either on an IPhone talking, looking at one, or listening to music. None of them looked where they were going, though they were crossing with a walk signal.

Others just meander out into the street from all angles and at any time they want.

I’m surprised that thousands more aren’t hit each year.

Maybe the IPhone/earphone music boxes are Darwin’s latest way of thinning the herd.

What a damned waste of a life.

I notice that so many have zero situational awareness.
I see people walking riding bikes on the edge of the road. They never watch what approaches from behind.
There could be someone driving while texting or talking on there phone back there.
If I swerved to the right just two feet they can be possumed so easily.

I'm very leery of merely walking by the road these days - even if I am personally not on a phone.

You don't know what the drivers cruising by are up to.

The problem is, it isn’t just the pedestrians who are the idiots with cell phones.

Drivers aren’t paying attention either when they are driving while texting or dialing.

Or watching a movie on their new in car entertainment center.
