Fearful CBS on Church Police Force: Why Can’t They Just Call 911?
Newsbusters ^ | April 18, 2017 | Scott Whitlock

CBS This Morning on Tuesday did the bidding of the ACLU and expressed concern over an Alabama mega church lobbying to have its own police force. Showing a clueless attitude in the wake of the 2015 Charleston church shooting, reporter David Begnaud asked Greg Garrison of AL.com: “Why can't they just rely on 911 and call for help if they need it?”

You know. The bell tower in any church is a great tactical advantage.

That is my question on “Campus police”. Why can’t they just call the cops?

Cuz when you need help in a heartbeat, the police are just minutes away.

Maybe the church leaders should turn the tables on these puke faced scumbags, and just say they are trying to protect themselves from some deranged white, evangelical Christian, MAGA Trump supporter. Do you think that would take the wind out of their sails? 😄

Why would they need a police force, and not just armed guards? Sounds fishy to me.

A couple of threads on FR from a week ago.

A large church in Alabama is one step closer to creating its own police force, a move that seems to be without precedent in the U.S. The state’s Senate has approved legislation that would give church police officers the same powers other law enforcement officers have in Alabama. After being approved by Alabama’s Senate on a 24-4 vote, the bill now heads to the state House of Representatives, where an identical bill was sent to the Public Safety and Homeland Security committee in February. Both chambers’ legislation specifically names Briarwood Presbyterian Church, a Birmingham megachurch

Alabama Senate votes to allow church to form police dept. I have seen this time and time again. A church feels they are under attack by outside forces and they decide to use armed guards to protect the Pastors and parishioners. The first time I ran across this was in the early “80”s when I asked if my wife and child could attend my sister-in-laws church. She told me she would have to get permission from the leaders of the church to attend. After inquiring why, I learned that the church had been under attack and that guards were...

It is. It’s about hiding dirty laundry. They had a drug bust at the school a couple 9f years ago, very embarassing. So their solution is to create their own police and jurisdiction so they can handle stuff internally and not out in the public eye.

Why would they have to “lobby” out in the public arena in the first place? Hire who you want and pay them what you want. Do you have to have permission to hire security? There are neighborhoods with people that look like something from black ops in Iraq. If a megachurch has a few buck left over from new carpet, why not?

Technically, yes, but unless you park a patrol car in every square mile it will stay true.

Seconds count, but unless taxpayers want cops sitting all over the place waiting for calls that’s the way it is.

It was never meant to be funny. It was meant to be poignant. And it is.

It is an argument for protecting yourself via exercise of the 2A or, as in this case, ensuring your protection is self-provided.
