[Vanity] The CR: Another victory for Trump
EEE | 01 MAY 2017 | EEE

Posted on 05/01/2017 4:19:03 PM PDT by Extremely Extreme Extremist

All of you FReepers and conservatives out there listening to smug media reports about Schumer and the Dems popping champagne corks over the Continuing Resolution (CR) need to remember who you are dealing with again. As Rush likes to say, do not doubt me.

Trump is the Jason Vorhees of business, and now politics. He didn't get to the pinnacle of success by selling himself and his supporters out for short-term gain as so many politicians do. Rather, this is what in military terms is called a tactical retreat.

In a tactical retreat, you cut your losses and regroup. This is also a "tell" in poker.

Trump has nothing to gain by fighting for spending cut crumbs within an existing fiscal year, especially when you have North Korea breathing down our backs, our military needs immediate funds, and the structural side of big government programs (Obamacare, etc) still in effect. Fighting for cuts now is the equivalent of haggling over the cheapo purple properties in Monopoly.

By signing the CR, Trump just isolated Schumer and put the RINOs in Congress on notice: Advance my priorities or face an angry conservative/populist base in 2018.

The latest CR expires perfectly right at the end of the fiscal year 2017, which means Mulvaney will set the table and outline a clean budget for the new fiscal year that will honestly addresses entitlement spending, spending on liberal special-interest programs, and even the proper role of the federal government in said programs itself.

Once that is discussed, the Republicans can own and run with the narrative, if they choose to do so. They can argue that they reached out to Dems 5 months earlier and funded the government, but now it's the Dems' turn to work with Republicans on reducing the size and spending of the Federal Government.

Meanwhile this spring and summer, Trump can work on tax reform, repealing Obamacare, and getting the states more involved in policies. Also this takes away the shutdown card from the Dems. It will not have as much as an impact in September because the budgetary process will be returned to normal in September.

Of course, if there is another CR or if Republicans give away the store and continue the status quo, then yes I'll be red-hot too. But for now I'm willing to give Trump the benefit of the doubt, because he's got his plate full and needs to get more of his picks confirmed and prepare for an upcoming 2nd SCOTUS vacancy. That also removes leverage from the Dems on blocking such a pick.

They’ll block a second SCOTUS pick anyways.

Are you crazy?

They don’t need leverage to get what they want.

They obviously already have Congress in their pockets.

No more mulligans for Trump. We better see a big battle in September over the budget/wall or the Trump admin will be toes up. The Dems and K Street Republicans will successfully detach Trump from his base if he allows the beltway GOP to drive the agenda again.

Trump has no pitching (McConnell) and no hitting (Ryan). But you can’t take a few innings off in “tactical retreat”.

There is absolutely nothing good in this CR and therefore 2017 is lost. Trump now has a 3-year term to drain the swamp. Not good.

Why would you want to fight for cuts now when you can propose eliminating entire leftist bureaucracies, departments, programs, agencies, regulations and other assorted leftist gobbledygook in the upcoming brand new budget?

‘They’ll block a second SCOTUS pick anyways.’

The same way they blocked Gorsuch?

I think he won on the wall as well. He got a very large increase for boarder security, which includes “repair” of existing wall. That’s about as much “new” wall as he can put up in the remaining 4 months anyway.

Trump wins again.

I agree. Trump will give the dems a few small wins knowing that he’ll eventually get what he wants.

Big Picture thinkers will see the rational of your premise. Trump can do a lot between now and Sept. That battle will take place on a well prepped field.

I’m tired of our freakin party backstabbing their base...they keep inserting the butchers knives deeper and deeper!!! And unfortunately we have no choice but continue voting them in instead of having the EVIL RATS RULE us with a rod of iron!!

Logic doesn't apply here. This is Trump waiting it out while making plans to cross the Delaware and sneak attack the Hessians. This 5 months is perfect for Trump to regroup and bury the Deep State, without being distracted from the stupid shutdown every 3 weeks.

Well, I hope you're right, but there is one sentence that is particularly "troubling", as they say:

the Republicans can own and run with the narrative, if they choose to do so.

My fear is that September is just another opportunity for the Republicans to surrender.

When you control both houses of Congress and the White House, the whole idea of a tactical retreat should be laughable. The border wall was the centerpiece of Trump's candidacy and the reason many of us voted for him. It's early days and I still expect Trump to fulfill that promise despite the weak sisters of the GOP he must work with, but it's off to an embarrassingly bad start.

They did block Gorsuch for what. 2 months?

They’re going to “try” to block everything. Right now they ARE blocking the wall.

I'm not excusing the GOP Congress of anything. I have more respect for warm beer than I do for the Republican Congress.

I'm saying that Trump in September will be in a much better position to advance the narrative that government must be reined in and spending reduced. The RINOs will have no choice but to go along, or else they will lose seats in 2018.

The GOPe wants to be in the minority, that way they can say to their base, we tried. They do not even care if they lose their jobs in congress, the money they will make from deep state when they leave will be massive.

What have they given Trump besides SC justice? That was a safe bet for them, replacing Scalia. You watch, next time they will not if a lib leaves the court. Oh and do not hold you breath for them giving Trump his budget.

They want Trump to have no 2nd term, if he does get a 2nd term they want congress to be lib control, that way he will never get anything done with them.
