A company is set to open what Governor Cuomo's office says will be the biggest commercial hydroponic facility in the nation in Rochester.
The governor says Clearwater Organic Farms will build a 15 acre, 650,000 square-foot facility at Eastman Business Park, creating 137 new jobs. About half of those positions will be reserved for veterans and the unemployed, the state says.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
"The new Clearwater Organic Farms facility will drive innovation, create jobs for New Yorkers who need them most, and bolster economic growth throughout the region," Governor Cuomo said in a release. "Our economic strategy continues to generate new activity, attract high-growth industries to the region and build momentum to move the Finger Lakes forward."
The state is offering $6 million in funding and tax credits for the $50 million project.

Clearwater Organic Farms Partner Peter Ciriello said, "When we set out to plan and design Clearwater Organic Farms, Rochester, our goal was to build a world class baby leaf production facility using ‘state of the art’ process technology and grow science that would both be environmentally and socially responsible. We recognized that we could create real value in growing and providing fresh, local and safe baby leaf vegetables and herbs to the local markets and still have a project that would be energy efficient and one that would provide job and career opportunities for workers that might not otherwise be able to work in food production. We appreciate the support we have received from the State of New York, Monroe County, the Town of Greece, and our many strategic technology and commercial partners to make Clearwater Organic Farms in Rochester a reality."
They better keep the CO2 levels in the green house below 300ppm or the plants will all die...

If they can do it in very high cost Japan they can do it in New York State, but I hope their business model is regional because there will be far lower cost producers elsewhere, even regionally for instance central PA.
Why are they not building these things right next to natural gas or coal generation station, they could pipe in the CO2 and use LED lights / batter banks during off peak hours to supplement the light????
Not to mention the hot steam they could pipe in during winter to keep the plant temps at optimal...

Because they’re unaccustomed to thinking of how to benefit from waste energy or waste heat sources, it’s got to be vented out into the atmosphere so the Global Warmists can be all culty and smug.
Most of the bozos applying will be working to start clandestine grow operations in the plant or steal equipment for home grow operations.

Backyard Farms grows tomatoes hydroponically in Madison Maine. They are located there to access lots of fresh water and town specific low power costs. The town has their own power company and get it’s energy from a local dam. Power cost is probably the biggest factor in this type of operation.
Lots of hydroponics businesses are springing up - mostly for local veggies and greens in places where they don’t grow year round.

And any equipment bought will end up in the homes of peckerheads that will eventually be caught because the snow on their roof is melted from the heat in the attic
This kind of hydroponic operation is the trend for bagged greens anymore. It’s really kind of neat how it’s all designed, but I prefer my food grown in soil. The hydroponically grown stuff is basically a leaf acting like a balloon, filling up with whatever hydroponic solution it’s being fed. It also is done in a completely sterile environment. Workers and visitors MUST wear sterile suits before entering the facility. Once any disease starts in there, it’s almost impossible to get rid of.
Nope, LED lighting changed that. Also greatly lower the energy use as well.
As I understand it, part of this operation is supposed to be used for growing “Medical” weed.
I think some here are confusing indoor gardening using high intensity lights with green house gardening using the sun. The picture provided showed little or no lighting. Greenhouses are a smart way to extend the growing season in northern climates.
Hydroponics has many advantages over soil grown plants. It is far cleaner, water is much easier to work with than soil, root pests are easily dealt with, & plant hydration is always at a maximum, which encourages lush growth.
better check with Windset Farms about “large” hydroponic greenhouses....
You’re absolutely right. Everyone is funding these folks. They’ll steal what they can and cut and run. And I bet the jobs will be closer to 30.
