The vast majority of servicemembers joined the military to serve their country. While ready to do whatever that entailed, nothing prepares them for the horrors of war, some people were deeper "in the shit" than others and one can only imagine the long-term head trip that ensues.

All of our veterans, including these men, deserve only the very best care and consideration.

I saw stats the other day that half of the Vietnam Vets had gone to the PTSD well. When you realize that that includes the REMFs, you are probably getting over 100% for the guys that saw combat. Numbers here (Table 1): https://www.ptsd.va.gov/professional/research-bio/research/vietnam-vets-study.asp

That’s a high percentage, is it not?
Or was this similar during WW2?
If the amount having PTSD issues is unique to Viet-Nam and newer wars, one has to ask why, what made this conflict so horrific.

I just missed the draft by one year. I have a few relatives who came back from Viet-Nam as very different characters than before they enlisted. Many changes were permanent. I also have a few relatives who returned from duty, older and wiser, but the same spirits, the same personalities inside.
It’s an unknowable question.

Many presume war has always caused such reaction in men, but was more closely recorded and more directly treated only in recent decades.

And we must remember since 9/11, many of our troops have had multiple deployments into combat zones.

Multiple Deployments.
I always thought this was a terrible thing to do to any servicemember, just because the military law allowed for it.
I also heard that the date one’s active duty ended could be changed, moved forward at the discretion of the military.
I would have hated it , had my end of active duty date been suddenly shifted to 18 more months. Oh, I’d hate to think of it!

That alone would be sure to wear down or damage someone’s psyche. Multiple Deployments most likely ruined more than a few marriages too. Yes, one takes the vows, but some couple don’t do well living separate lives year after year. Resentment can build. Others, the enforced separation matters not, just par for the course.

I agree.

It’s disgraceful and disgusting that we’re still in Afghanistan.

The availability of illicit drugs both during and later would be my conclusion. WWII vets generally had to self-medicate with alcohol. Vietnam folks had more options, some of which caused long term damage. I would like to see the percentage of folks getting PTSD benefits who haven't used illegal drugs.

And we must remember since 9/11, many of our troops have had multiple deployments into combat zones.

As opposed to the World War I and II vets who generally got to come home only if they got badly enough wounded. Perhaps the solution is to tell the troops 'fight until you win'. That might have been another factor in Vietnam - 'do your tour and go home' would seem to create a different day-to-day mindset than 'fight until you win or get killed'.

In my experience as a Marine infantry combat veteran, I see an inverse correlation between actual combat experience and PTSD. In other words, those who saw the worst combat moved on the fight the next battles in their lives, while those who saw the least (or no close combat at all) climbed on the PTSD gravy train and chose to live in the past. Like most men who lived through it, I have grown up problems and darned poor hearing, but the experience made me a better person. Taxpayers don’t owe me a thing. Semper Fidelis...

Military sexual trauma can also lead to PTS and the survivors should also be treated.

FYI...Cohen Veterans Network will do outpatient counseling for free for veterans AND their families who can also develop PTS. They are a growing organization and are going mobile like the VA can offer in some areas.

no they don’t...

it may not have been the PTSD that caused them to commit crimes...

they may have done so even if they had not joined the military...

what kind of “infractions” were they ???

most veteran sufferers of PTSD do not commit crimes ...

PTSD does not effect a person’s moral aptitude...

they may act strange but usually not criminally minded...

nice try...

You sound like someone I would respect. I got burned out on PTSD claims when I read about the guy that had never even left the states putting in for the gravy train.

I drew a good number, stayed at 1-H for my year, and didn’t even have to put in for a deferment or re-classification. But I’d suggest you read Always A Marine’s post just below yours.

I’m sorry but that is crap.

Due to the lack of other support groups, in 1981, I sat with Viet Vets in PTSD groups and it’s not “drugs” that did it to them.

It’s impossible to state a simple ‘cause’ but the main issue was the chasm between the reality they knew as normal, and the surrealistic insanity they saw in VN.

No clear cut ‘enemy’, ‘friendlies’ who turned around and fragged you, no clear cut ‘battle fields’ or orderly battles, just impenetrable, wretched hellish jungles where every step could be your last.

They faced a sadistic enemy skilled in the most gruesome tortures, with no respect for “Geneva Convention” type stuff.

Little kids and women running out to blow them to hell.

It was all relentless stress and uncertainty, 24/7 with not a second of rest from the possibility that at, at any moment, you could be seeing your friends gruesomely torn apart in front of you...or that you yourself would be reduced to a heap of bleeding, screaming meat, praying that a chopper *might* come and get you out before you were taken prisoner by demons who would make you wish you had died.

Then, the utter lack of ‘patriotic support’ like the WW1 and WW2 vets got, no hero parades when they come...people spitting on them and calling them baby killers.

You got no cheers or medals...you only got a stigma...those “crazy, dangerous Viet Nam Vets”.

You really should apologize for that inane, self-inflicted/dope hypothesis.

I love these guys and *still* hook up with VN vets for support.

The troops today face the same madness against the Musim psychos who seem determined to surpass the VC in sadism, barbarism and cruelty.
