I don’t believe Venezuela’s problems can be solely blamed on socialism.

Yes, Socialism will Progress to a much better life for all, if only the right Socialists are put in charge and given absolute power.

Yup, they were this close to creating the workers’ paradise, and along comes that pesky market adjustment in crude prices.

Countries with more diverse and expansive economies were better prepared to weather the storm.

Socialism is the main reason Venezuela no longer has a diverse and expansive economy.

Socialism is the problem.
Maduro nationalized the oil business and the talent that operated it left.
His flunkies can’t pump oil.

“Something that intensely pushed Venezuela into destabilization was the oil crash of 2014. Because the price of oil dropped so severely, and has remained low, pressure has been put on countries that rely on oil sales for most of their income. Countries with more diverse and expansive economies were better prepared to weather the storm.”

Yeah, because after Chavez stole what he wanted and Maduro stole what he wanted, there was literally nothing left for anyone else. But that’s not socialism’s fault. If they only had the right guy in charge, things would be going swimmingly. Right? Do I get the participation trophy?

When I left Venezuela in 1974 the inflation adjusted price of oil was 42 dollars. This was prior to Chavez. Venezuela had a vibrant economy and the stores were full of food. It had a growing middle class and one of the higher standards of living in South America. Today oil is about 46 dollars a barrel.

Venezuela has crashed and burned due Marxism.

Oh yes, it was the evil oil companies and Rex Tillerson. Didn’t have anything to do with the fact that Venezuela nationalized their oil and put stupid politicos to run it, stealing from Exxon.
Not the fact that they took farms and ranches from owners and gave the property to people that didn’t k ow how to farm, making Venezuela an import country for food rather than the export country they were.
shall I go on?

There are many socialist nations that aren’t in complete shambles, and many that have had some success.

What socialist country has had any success?

Whatever the cause of Venezuelan implosion, the reason it can’t escape it is because the Cubans are in control.

The author is grasping at at straws. Venezuela's oil industry has dried up not out of price but out of inability to produce, that inability linked directly with the expropriation of foreign oil resources and the failure of the sitting government to maintain those facilities with its own money. Were price the problem Venezuela would still have some, if reduced, foreign income. In fact, it has none.

I'd love to see a list of those "socialist" countries the author considers to have done well. In fact, they all displayed precisely the same problem: an autocratic, kleptocratic Party whose members enriched themselves at the expense of the citizens. Socialism is the credo of thieves, nothing more.

What will help Venezuela is bombing the presidential palace, skinning Maduro alive and hanging every Cuban mercenary from a lamppost.
