How crazy would I need to be to move to Detroit?

Posted on 07/29/2017 10:37:51 AM PDT by HiTech RedNeck

Back in job market again after end of my current contract. I updated my listings (as a UNIX/LINUX C and C++ expert) on Dice and Monster the other day, and the phone began ringing off the hook.

Well, one recruiter wants to know if I am interested in full time work, direct hire, in Detroit, for the process control of a steel mill whose business is reportedly burgeoning.

This looks like a MAGA move to me, and the recruiter points out that it isn't all decay, there is rebuilding going on too.

My rhetorical question: how crazy does a high tech red neck have to be to make such a move? It can't be all bad -- this is Kid Rock territory after all.

To slum in order to MAGA or not to slum, that is the question.

Go for it! You can look at neighborhoods via internet or hop on a plane to take a look

Nothing wrong with moving to Detroit. It all depends on WHERE in Detroit. There are some very nice, very safe (and very expensive) suburbs, and the metro area is thriving.

They’re using C++ and Linux for process control? I’d have thought it would be Allen Bradley or Siemens.

After the Detroit riots and the white flight caused by the 20 year reign of Mayor Coleman Young, the people moved to the northern suburbs. Really nice areas.

GO for it.

Think of it as a stint in a dangerous third world location. Gates, locks, buffer zones --make your money and get out.

Maybe get a cabin in one of the many beautiful rural areas just to get away from it all.

No matter how much they rebuild Detroit the weather still sucks. Sunbelt or bust.

My nephew (24) just got back (to So Cal) from Detroit after two years there. (Bad gf/ good he’s out). He moved there bc his friends did, and they all loved it. We thot he was nuts, bc who wants to shovel snow and where are the palm trees? But he had a great time. It’s probably neighborhoods, the way any big city is. Perhaps.

well imho .. i would see first if i could find a good job somewhere else

there are some decent to nice places to live OUTSIDE of Detroit, but would your office still be in D-city itself?
then I would see if I could find somewhere else to work

avoid Detroit, Flint, Dearborn, and a few more if you value your safety.

Ann Arbor is nice but overpriced due to university, check some of the smaller or more rural areas as some of them are quite nice and cheaper

just my 2 cents worth. i see others advising YES. Ok, then the answer has to be...go look and evaluate for yourself.
but be careful of the dangerous and “Amish” areas is all I can say, go look

Come on up. Detroit is hugely different than it used to be. Welcome to Michigan. When you come north give us a call and we’ll take you out on one of the zillions of crystal clear lakes upnorth.

We do have snow but we use a broom because it is so dry. Very rare to scrape. Great people. Great beer. Some of the most gorgeous neighborhoods in the country are here. Humidity pretty low so summers are perfect. Never gets too hot. Best fishing ever. Don’t listen to the naysayers. You will love Michigan - we just moved here from the left coast. Low cost of living. Awesome food!!

It's a three-step process.
  1. Buy a gun
  2. Move to Detroit
  3. Get this tee: I survived Detroit tee shirt
